I've heard of Okamikakushi. It's a VN for the PSP. It's natural for it to remind you of Higurashi, as it was written by Ryuukishi, the same guy who wrote Higurashi and Umineko. I haven't actually watched it though. I read it was duller than Higurashi.

I'm pretty sure Jayn uses the GIMP for it, which is freeware. So you could download that.
