The Core Materias can also ba used to mix and match, however, they have catergories, Head, Body and Legs so he could use Hawk, Tiger and Grasshopper for example, he can even sue two of the same color and one odd one out

When using all three fo a same colour, a Materia Combo is born and he can only remain in that form for a few minutes since it does strain his human body, so Combos are really a desperate option.

Basically, the Core Materia's are based on desire, it's natural for peopel to desire something while the Purple Cores negate Desire and are a different power entirely.

Core Materia
Basically, Core Materia are very different from the regular matera, they focus on the power of the animals through a special device that was made for it thousands of years before humanity walked the earth, there were a total of 21 of these in sets of three but the Orange Core's were lost forever and the Purple Cores were sealed away.
