We could go over the "what-ifs" and "maybes" all we wanted. That really doesn't change the fact that Kamina did die because he went to go bring up Simon's fighting spirit and was caught off guard by Tymilph. That was really nobody's "fault". My memory's a bit hazy on this next part, but something (I don't remember what, I think it was Nia?) caused Simon to stand up and fight not long after this when Guame was attacking. Not only did he do this for himself and Team Dai-Gurren, but for Kamina as well, because he knew that was what Kamina would want him to do. From here he not only avenged Kamina, but saved the universe. I think that earns him the "hero" status and then some.

Okay, first off: I said "became a man" so to speak. I didn't literally mean he became a man, I meant that he got over his angst and started fighting again.
Anywhom, Yes, you are correct with the gun scenario. That being said, if Kamina were to have survived, I doubt they would have even gotten far enough to beat Guame, let alone Lordgenome and the Anti-Spirals. You said it yourself: "Kamina has the least amount of Spiral Power of Team Dai-Gurren". Meaning that, even if he did awaken it in rage after Simon had died, it still wouldn't have reached the amounts that Simon had gotten to. You also said that Kamina's badassery comes from Simon believing in him. If Simon were gone, who else would there be? The rest of Team Dai-Gurren wouldn't cut it, because none of them are as close to Kamina as Simon is (or was in this case). Knowing these things, it brings me to the conclusion that Kamina's death was no accident. His death was tragic, don't get me wrong, but it was the kick in the pants Simon needed to start believing in himself, and to stop being Kamina's sidekick all the time.
Well if you were tasked with killing a universe-sized...thing bent of killing your entire race, I'm sure you would use a drill if it was provided. Man or not, that's just common sense. Besides, Kamina was a "man" and he was the first in the series to use Giga Drill Break(er).

Well it's not like it was intended. Besides, Kamina's death helped Simon to learn to fend for himself, which led to him leading the charge against the Anti-Spirals in the end. So yes, he indirectly killed Kamina, but it led to Simon "becoming a man" so to speak and allowing him to save the universe.
