I would caution against worrying too much about respect and the public reception of you. It's important, no doubt, but I've learned from experience, it's not everything. I went through a phase where I was trying to impress people really hard and ended up not only acting as someone far from myself, but hurting some people in the process. Just be yourself, be as nice and polite as you can, and everything will be okay, I think. But that's just me, hah.

Some find it easier to socialize through text, so I suppose it's just up to personal preference. My one problem with speaking over the internet is you can't really read inflection and body language, which are such key components of human interaction.
