Meh, this entire discussion just stemed from my boredom anyway.

Kamina had enough Spiral Power to use a Giga Drill Break. What I'm saying is that though he had less Spiral Power than anyone else in the team, that doesn't mean that he would have continued to had Simon died.
And most likely the same would have happened to Kamina; he'd ragequit a battle, find Nia's box, unlock it with Simon's Core Drill (which he'd keep) and wind up adopting Nia as a replacement younger sibling figure. Eventually he'd realise that it wasn't just Simon believing in him that gave him his strenght; everything he did, he did himself, no matter who it was for. So he'd instead fight for Team Dai-Gurren's sake, and that determination would allow him to win in the end because that's what Kamina always did; beat the odds.
Obviously Kamina wouldn't have stuck around during the timeskip; he'd likely have taken off wandering the globe while the others handled things in Simon City, and he'd take Nia and Yoko with him. Then when the Anti-Spirals invaded, he'd come back to save the day with Yoko piloting Lagann and him piloting Gurren. Nia becomes Anti-Spiral messenger, they decide to save her, and everything goes the same way it did anyway, with the difference being that Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann would resemble Simon instead.

If I shot a bullet at you, missed, and hit Bushy instead, would it not still be true that I had shot Bushy? Intentional or not, Simon killed Kamina. This is why Simon was so angry, as well as Yoko.
And frankly, we'll never know what would have happened had Simon been the one to die instead (which he surely would have been had Kamina not been such an easy target). For all we know, there could have been some massive latent Spiral Energy that would have awakened if that had happened.
Also, Simon never became a man. Men do not tend to kill people with drills.

Kamina was caught off-guard after saving Simon. If Simon hadn't decided to be a stalker and follow Yoko to where Kamina was, he wouldn't have gotten distracted to the point of not being able to function. If that hadn't happened, then Kamina wouldn't have had to save him.
Ergo, Simon's actions killed Kamina.
