I'm still working on this, mind you. This is a prolouge:

We all sat around in a circle. A month ago if I hadn’t met them, my three and only best friends, who knows where we all would have ended up. The wind blew against the window, creating an eerie sound that caused me to shudder. Anne, who was sitting on my right, passed the blanket to me. Mira began moving a metal figure across the board. Ritchie watched in horror as she began to stop on a dark blue square, which of course only made her smile grow larger.

“HA!†she yelled, “Now I have Park Place AND Boardwalk!†She make sure to put emphases on the word, and.

Yes, we were playing Monopoly, what else were we supposed to do at twelve in the morning; and I’m talking midnight here.

Ritchie calmly rolled the dice and began to move his piece. Sometimes, I just don’t get how that guy keeps his cool. He rolled a second time…doubles yet again; his luck seemed to be running out. Yet again, for the third time, he rolled doubles. Cursing silently, he moved his piece over to the jail square. He looked up straight at me, “Alex, would you mind not staring at me like its life or death? You’re scaring me.â€

Only then did I notice that I had been staring at time the whole time he had made his turn. Not my fault I planned on winning at least one of the times we played games. I felt a soft poke on my shoulder; Anne was looking over at me.

"Plan on making your turn?†she said in her soft voice.

We continued to play for the next few hours. Mira eventually had put up hotels on all her properties, Ritchie had gone bankrupt soon after that happened. Anne had been out long before that, and I had just landed on Mira’s Boardwalk.

All she did was smile. Game over. We quickly put up the board and began distributing beds, which because one can only fit so many in a room, we only had three. Someone was going to have to share. Anne claimed the top bunk on the bunk bed, leaving just me, Ritchie, and Mira to decide amongst ourselves. Mira sat on the twin sized bed, quickly joined by Ritchie.

She just smiled and shrugged, “Bottom bunks all yours then.â€

You’d think that if we were at my house, I’d get first choice on where I sleep. But then again, I was fine with the bottom.

Out of nowhere, a crash sounded down the hall, causing everyone, (Except the sleeping Anna), to jump up to a standing position.

Mira took step towards the door. “I’ve got this.â€

Ritchie and I opened out mouths to protest, but were quickly silenced by a wave of her hand.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be right back.†she reassured us.

Soon after she left an eerie silence filled the room.
