At 4000, you'll see shadows at greater distances, but have blockier shadows, at 2000, the draw distance will be closer, but you'll have less blocky shadows.

Btw, changing fShadowDistance to 2000 in your Skyrimprefs.ini is also a good way to reduce the blockiness on shadows.

In that case, there's no need to upgrade your graphics card. Not until you get a monitor that can support 1080p. That's just my opinion. There's no need for a 580 unless you can use higher resolutions.

That's the thing, if you can play games just fine as it is, there isn't a huge reason to get a new card. The only difference I've noticed is what resolution you play in.

You're right. 580 is an amazing card, and will run Skyrim at the highest possible settings.

Are you going from a 550 ti to a 560 ti? If so, I wouldn't recommend that. The 600 series cards are coming out and are going to blow the 500 series away.

Shadows take a massive performance hit. The trick is to go into your Skyrimprefs.ini

It should be here:
C:\Users\*yourname*\Documents\My Games

Change the line
iBlurDeferredShadowMask=1

to this:
iBlurDeferredShadowMask=32

This blurs the shadows, so you can play on high shadows, but it won't look so blocky.

I played Skyrim in 1080p with HD textures and got 60fps. That's with overclocking though.

You should be able to run it on High in 1080p. Ultra isn't a huge difference.
