I stumbled upon this video and just.. wow, it's incredibly sad. Most likely because of the music, but whatever.

Warning: The title of this video is "Soccer Player Dies During Game". It is not graphic or disturbing at all, but just warning you that it's not pleasant.

Oh this is a bit old. But I remember it clearly. At least he died laughing.

I knew that he had died in 2004, but I had never seen this video before. And yeah, you can see him smiling just before. It's crazy how fast your heart can stop..

"The game was being broadcast live on television and Benfica were leading 1-0. Fehér, who had just come on as a substitute, received a yellow card in injury time and suddenly bent forward seemingly in pain and then fell backwards to the ground. Team mates rushed immediately to aid Fehér before medical personnel arrived on the pitch. CPR was performed as players looked on in visible distress. An ambulance arrived on the pitch and Fehér was rushed to the hospital. His condition was covered by the Portuguese media throughout the day but before midnight Fehér's death was confirmed. The Public Prosecutor (the Portuguese agency responsible for the release of autopsy details) announced that Fehér died from ventricular fibrillation brought on by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. He was 24 years old."

It wasn't just randomly. His heart condition was apparently overlooked by the medical checkups and everything. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a disease where your heart is around 40% bigger than usual, so I guess it was just overworked. Still incredibly sad though..

Yeah, kinda reminds me of the movie John Q. Maybe it's true that doctors get paid more when they don't do expensive check-ups like heart conditions and stuff. Health care isn't how it should be in any country, and it really sucks.

What I don't really get is why it happened when he wasn't doing anything extensive. He was walking. You'd think that it would happen when he was running or something.

I think I remember something like that happening to someone in my school. He was playing rugby and just keeled over in the middle of the match. I'm not sure what age he was, but he couldn't have been older than 18 or 19. Completely healthy otherwise.

That heart condition you mentioned is apparantly very hard to detect as it only shows symptoms when the heart is put under stress, such as when playing sport.

    A deadly time bomb...

Yeah, it really sucks. A handful of soccer players have died from it in the last 5 years, and I'm really clueless as to why it's only the athletes. Like, can you live with it without anything happening? Does it only happen while playing a sport, or are athletes just unlucky? Whatever the case, it's tragic. Miklos Feher was an awesome striker, too.

It's only when the heart is put under stress, so it must be that combined with other things or else it would happen the first time they play sport.

After the guy died our school offered all those who play sport for the school to go to heart screening at a local univesity to see if they are at risk.

But if it's from stress, it shouldn't just be the athelites. Everybody should get a screeing because everybody is at risk.

Yeah I agree, although not all health care covers stuff like that, so some people get shafted and they found out when it's already too late.

Soo...that's it? he just...falls over and dies?

I don't know why but I really don't find it sad apart from the fact something like that can actually happen.

Does anyone have any articles on it?

I heard about this but that video is so sad. What a shock to see him smiling one moment and then just falling over the next. It really choked up the whole team. It does certainly give some incentive for people to pay attention more to the health of an athlete's heart. I will say though that at least he died doing what he wanted to which was playing soccer. It probably mattered very much to him by the smile on his face. It just really is startling to see that look of happiness and then that tragedy after.

But yes this was something quite sad.I've never seen this before.
