Since the first caveman's grunts, or the creation of Latin, words have developed into an essential skill for every human to master.

Now, i've heard that people see words as something trivial, a restricted way of expressing your thoughts, feelings or beliefs, and are basicly useless compared to action.

While others see them as earth changing things. From creating empires, to topling kingdoms, words have always been strong, without them we would not have a history on which to look back on, no way of creating peace treaties and warfare actions. Without them we would be useless.

    What do you believe?

words are changing the world. these days we don't use freedom of speech, because they're afraid what people will think. they say "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me", but that is not true. even when someone says a joke, people get hurt. (not me, but certain people)

The only words that change worlds are words that lead to action.

They have no meaning if there's nothing that comes from their being spoken.

I'm just curious as to where you heard that statement. It really doesn't make any sense whatsoever. How can words be restricting? Words describe everything. Sure, you can describe things by creating them or by art or whatever. And yeah, I guess that can express your thoughts. But really, it restricts it? I don't think so. I don't think you're going to go through your whole life expressing yourself through art without words. I feel that you need words to describe/express yourself.

So, I think we need words. Words can be/have been proven to be powerful.

sure of course i think it can, to some extent. tho i dont' think it could change the world, i would say actions speak louder than words.

Well many types of philosophers say that 'You can never describe the universe with mere words, it has to be felt by all.' or something similar to that.
I mean if you think about it, when you ask someone to describe what love is or how you feel in love. Many people who are in love (I mean real love, not lusting over someone) say it is hard to explain or you can't explain it. Thats what I meant.

Oh. Well that makes more sense. Thanks for clearing that up.

I get the whole in love thing and not being able to describe it. However, I don't think thats restricting you. I just say that you can't think of a way to describe because its so great. Though sometimes if people are in love, they describe the feeling with metaphors.

Depends on what words are being said, and how they are said/presented/expressed.

Obviously a guy shouting at a crowd with no personal feeling being expressed isn't going ot get much done compared to a guy who is calmy asserting an audience with passion and emotion.

That is kinda like saying words restrict you from saying how you feel. XD

Also like I was saying about describing the Universe, think about a younger person coming up to you and asking 'What is existence?' you could never give a full explination in words, you would have to learn what it is, essentially FEEL what it is.

We stir the world a little more every second...even if all we did was twitch our second-to-last toe...

Ok so you have a point. But for me, to say that words have restrictions, just doesn't seem right. I suppose you're right since there are some experiences that you just can't describe. Though to say that it restricts, restricts just seems too harsh.

Couldn't we just come up with words to describe it? Words are being created in the English language constantly. I think if we came up with words, then they wouldn't be so restricting. :]

I'd like to see some significant testimonials of this being the case. Diplomacy is still the most widely used way of dealing with problems in the world today.

That aside, I'm pretty sure most haven't forgotten (and agree) that language is one, if not the most, profound invention the human race has.

agreed words are very affective and help more than actions in war.

I kinda of agree, but still it doesn't seem like a tremendous feat for a race like humanity. I mean most, if not all, living things communicate with each other in some form or another.

Language and words are expressive and help people get things across to one another. Certainly, someone who can wield words well and construct sentences that are motivational can be inspiring. Also, words can be put into poems or song lyrics that can help make a person feel reactive emotions to them.

However, words alone aren't enough to topple kingdoms, create empires, etc. It takes a -strong person- who uses those words and does actions to make the words an actual reality. People can talk forever about how they don't like a leader, want peace with some neighboring country or whatever and make it sound good but until people put their money where their mouth is, it doesn't mean a thing.

Words today rarely have the same effect as they have had in the past. People are too cynical, skeptical and generally desensitized to everything.

Unless the words are backed up with, or followed by actions they aren't likely to get anything done. There was a saying I heard "You can get more done with a kind word and a gun, than you can with a kind word alone"
