I'm watching the Smash Bros Direct from the other day, and reading about people hating how Zero Suit Samus wears high heels The argument being put forward that they're impractical for fighting Why is that suddenly a big deal with high heels? I mean, this is Smash Bros, a Nintendo franchise, where the game is already full to the brim with things that are impractical for fighting. Peach wears a dress, Wario wears weird pointy shoes. But for some reason it's high heels where the unreal-ism has gone too far? I mean, if you look at the footage, she doesn't even touch the heel end to the ground. The heel end is also a jet booster which she uses to enhances her strength, btw. But yeah, ZS Samus is always balancing on the balls of her feet, which makes sense since her character is based around agility (and now rocket boots) Really the high heel design perfectly compliments her combat style, but apparently it's terrible and impractical. Even if it was, the magic of a fictional world is that we can HAVE impractical things be practical like keyblades
Now, I heard someone(think it was someone from the Best Friends Zaibatsu) say that the guy who made Samus (who's name escapes me at the moment) said that Samus should never have high heels for reasons I can't quite remember (it has been a while since I heard this, like over a year but it was probably for practical reasons and the probably the fact that her armor doesn't have heels nor would it be able to have heels inside it) and I believe the heels were introduced in Other M.
There's always going to be someone around to nit-pick at the small details. It's just the concept of Samus being able to do all the things she does while in heels that warrants commentary. Well, now that you mention it....... That does sound familiar and I think it was Pat who said it.
Probably because its Samus. No one cares that Bayonetta wears heels because as a character she embraces femininity and sex (and gun heels are dang cool). Samus is (or was) a hulking 6 foot behemoth of muscle who took no **** and the fact shes being reduced to 'dat zero suit' is pretty dang insulting. I thought we got some progress in the Little Mac announcement acknowledging she was tall, but alas zero suit samus again. Its not a problem of functionality, its a problem of degrading a character into a sex icon.
Which is kinda funny when you think about it cause the Zero Suit covers more of her body then past renditions of her underclothes. Me personally, I don't have a problem with the Zero Suit's appearance cause it does serve somewhat of a practical purpose. The heels not so much...
I never get this view It's not like this is some new thing, she's been sexualized since day one. The only moment she was viewed as a strong tall character was before the ending to the first game was discovered
I always thought the bikini last shot was an obvious homage to Ripley' s last scene in Alien. But yeah, the high heels thing seems highly impractical. Judging from the remake that introduced the zero suit without her armor she' s no ninja fighter. No super speed, no monkey agility, no fancy karate moves, she' s forced to play hide and seek to survive.
CLARIFICATION TIME: So after I did some looking at my original source (Best Friends Watch Metroid Other M) apparently if you look at the original design for Zero Suit Samus had in giant letters it says "DO NOT MAKE HER FEET HIGH HEELS." And of course then Team Ninja made Other M and, cause girls, Samus' gotta have high heels and Nintendo continued to use the design in Super Smash Bros Brawl onward.
They're high heels but with a purpose instilled with them (pretty much jet pack augments.) Why are people still complaining? THEY SERVE A PURPOSE. Just like the outfits in Kill la Kill served a purpose.
lol -- they could have served a purpose and showed less skin. not saying i would want that and not saying i disagree, just pointing that out. unless it becomes a point later on. i shouldnt be talking about a show i havent seen.
It becomes a major point later on actually and the uniforms of some characters become more revealing because of certain revelations in the story.
Because high heels are impractical combat wear, make no sense for why someone like Samus would need f***ing high heels in the first place, they didn't really need to be heels to have that jetpack augment, and the heels were only added because they were in the God awful Other M. I have never watched Kill la Kill but I will take your word that the clothes serves some purpose...
As Takyon put it well, they serve a huge purpose for the series' themes and story. And this comes from someone who generally heavily dislikes fan service in anime. As for Samus wearing them...yeah, she doesn't hold swords in her feet or anything cool like that, but I seriously don't see the big deal, and I prefer having these stylish heel-things than if they gave her heavy boots that wouldn't need right with her sleek outfit.
Ok since that got posted can we talk about how incredibly, weirdly fanservicey Metal Gear Rising is in general ALL THOSE TIGHT CYBORG BUTTS. Not even knockin' it, girls/gays need m-batin' material too
The fan service aspect is really putting me off watching it. Raiden's heels are practical cause he can fight with them. I'm not saying her boots need to be bulky, but they could just made her soils a few inches taller with a techy look and BOOM, practical combat footwear. Hell, this is the future this game takes place so it's not out of the realm of possibility to make it look sleek without being big f*** off stormtrooper boots. DO YOU EVEN STAND HERE, SON?
