Why do people believe in horoscopes?

    SERIOUS QUESTION

Why do people believe things that people can make up so randomly? Some people obviously read newspapers or magazines to predict their future, but some look at the stars themselves to see. Why do they believe in them?

I don't want to see any... "Because their stupid" or "Because their gullible" or whatever coz it isn't really answering the question... and I kinda need to know for my art project.

To fill their bleak routines of lives with some hope from such phrases as "You will have a great day today" and feel good about themselves.

Hmm I can think up a few reasons why people read them and a reason for each:

People looking for answers: Horoscopes can lend guidance to people when it comes time to make a decision. People who cannot find the answers to the questions on their minds through other means may turn to horoscopes to find some guidance. When readers seemingly find answers to burning questions in a horoscope they may decide to turn to this method more often.

    For Entertainment:
It is no wonder why people read horoscopes for entertainment purposes. They can be incredibly entertaining.

    Out of Habit:
Some folks read the advice columns daily while others read the Sunday comics. Many people pause on astrology columns while reading the newspaper and magazines simply out of habit. People who grew up reading astrological forecasts will probably continue to do so, not because they expect real answers to questions and not because they necessarily find it entertaining, but rather because they have simply always done so.

Because it means that if I step outside and a bird shats on my head, one out of twelve other people had the same thing happen to them.

I've always done it out of habit. Every morning while getting ready for school, I would check the weather on the T.V. and since the horoscope was just a button press away, I'd check that, too. But I never believed it. If something that vaguely reminded me of the horoscope on that day, I might lean towards the horoscope advice, but I just checked it purely out of habit and for entertainment

The way I see it, horoscopes are an option for people who need a little guidance in what to do with their lives. Whether it's making financial or romantic decisions to bringing up a topic or concern that's been neglected. I like horoscopes because they help me consider things I should do when a dull day comes around.

Horoscopes don't exactly tell the future, they just give people suggestions on what it is they should do on that day.

It has a lot to do with superstition, also it's the same reason as to why people believe in God. They want to know everything is going to be okay, what they need to do to make them better people, and just a general comfort.

I guess because they can perhaps encourage you to do something you normally wouldn't? Like if lonely quiet Sally read her horoscope and it said "you will meet the man of your dreams today," she might be more likely to talk to the guys she'd normally shy away from. That and they can be mood boosters, like if one said the fight your have with your friend won't last long.

It's the same reason why people take advice from others.

I personally love reading my astrological profile, but that's a bit different from horoscopes.
