For the most part, you don't. When you're sleeping, you're paralyzed, which is to prevent you from hurting yourself.

I have a rhythmic movement disorder (the body rolling one), and I was a sleepwalker when I was a kid. Apparently the latter makes the former likelier. Sleepwalking might be genetic, and the causes of rhythmic movement disorder are a complete mystery.

I only hurt myself once because of it. I rolled under the bed side bar, my pajama got stuck on a nail and I hanged there for a while, then fell and banged my head on the floor. At least that' s what I' m told, it didn' t wake me up and I had no pain in the morning. I did glare at my shredded pajama in utter confusion for a good while though. I don' t think it could happen to me again, the symptoms are fading with the years.

It's usually a sign of stress.

Restless sleepers exist and tend to move around quite a bit while sleeping. It's usually a sign of stress.

I figure you just move to get comfortable, though I wouldn't knock the stress bit either.

in the dead of night after you fall asleep a centaur comes into your room and starts violently shaking your body around

you don't wake up because he's a tiny, invisible centaur and it just feels natural like you're rolling by yourself. but you're not it's all the centaur

I used to go to sleep on one end of the bed, and wake up on the opposite end of the bed all of the time. Apparently I was super stealthy at it when I was asleep because no one ever noticed me moving around when I shared the bed with someone. They would just be all "how did you get down there?" and I was like "idk... I fell asleep in that direction."

I actually move around all the time, and usually find my blankets completely flipped around my bed as well...how that keeps happening I would love to know. In fact, as a kid, I used to hit my head on my nightstand way too much, but now I usually stay in the same general spot, just in a different position.

Last year, my roommate used to go to bed later than I did, and when she'd come in the room apparently sometimes I'd sit up and check the time on my phone and have a brief conversation with her. I don't remember it at all. @__@

Don't think I've ever done any sleepwalking or much tossing and turning though.

Ah, I see. The way you worded it made it sound like you were referring to how much people in general (the "you") move while sleeping. Compare the sentences, "You don't move much while you sleep," and, "Most people don't move much while they sleep."

I did that at a con last year. I was playing Persona 4 Golden to help keep myself awake and the next thing I knew it was two hours later I was in a dungeon when the last thing I remembered I was in a social link scene. I fell asleep while playing and then continued playing while I was asleep.

I fall asleep on my right side and that's usually how I wake up.

Except sometimes I'm laying flat on my back when I get regular bouts of sleep paralysis and hallucinate that there's something pinning me down as it sits on top of me and strangles me. Shits scary as hell.

I've actually done this before. When I'm severely tired, for some ungawdly reason, I play video games. I just happened to put in Assassin's Creed: Revelations one day and just started out. I was climbing up the castle and apparently nodded off for a bit because when I opened my eyes again I was at the top. It was kind of trippy but ... I got to play and sleep at the same time so I was cool with it.

I toss and turn while I'm sleeping because my back starts to ache if I stay in the same position for too long. I've found that taking Men's One A Day vitamins helps me sleep better and keeps me from rolling around a lot. I'd imagine that stress might be a small portion but the larger portion of why I toss around in my sleep is due to the strain on my back. I've also been told that while sleeping I'll bend one leg, knee up in the air, and swing it back and forth.
