I'm still new and I was just wondering how the whole rep thing works. Do people actually give rep because they like what you say? Or is it just like friends give rep to each other?

Don't worry, I don't think you did... I just checked the rules and there's nothing saying we can't talk about rep... I mean, it's not like it's some forbidden topic, right?? And it's not like I'm asking for it, I was just curious...

Well, threads have been closed before because they were about rep. Something along the lines of "leading people to indirectly ask for pity rep, etc".

Anyways, I give rep when I see posts I think are intelligent/insightful. :| Don't see any other reason to do so.

The thread is okay as long as you're not asking for rep and.or talking about how much rep you have.

I give rep when I like what someone posted. I think I've only ever given one bad rep, and it was probably only when someone seriously messed up. I don't give out rep often -- only really when someone brings up a good point, makes me laugh, or posts a resource of some sort.

It's against the rules to rep/derep for no reason, and repping people because you're friends is seriously frowned upon.

    I give + rep when
    A) someone makes an argument that I was about to make, or
    B) someone verbally (textually?) rips apart some flaw in an argument in a spectacular way.

I give - rep when someone is being intolerant, ignorant, idiotic, thick-headed, or doesn't construct a good argument.

Usually, I give maybe 1 or 2 rep either way per day. I don't give it that often. I know some people like to randomly rep people (I have recieved that occaisionally), but I don't. I ALWAYS have a reason. You either win spectacularly, or you fail spectacularly. Then, you get rep from me. Normal posts, good or bad, never get my rep.

Wait? Does that mean mods can see who gives rep?

Speech in relation to ********** is forbidden.
you should only give (+/-)********** if someone has a good/bad post.
never say the word ********** or ***, it's abreviation.

I know Admins and possibly Super Mods can see rep. I'm not too sure about the latter though.

I give good rep to people that I feel deserve good rep for their statements and bad rep to people who I feel deserve bad rep for their statements, but I'll also randomly give +rep to my friends.

I wouldn't -rep enemies though. One I don't have any, and two, I don't keep grudges. They may have forgotten what happened while I'd still be giving bad rep. Kind of an asshole thing to do.

Super mods can't see who gives ********** while Admins can.

Whoa...this isn't 1984 dude... staff isnt like Big Brother XD

I highly doubt that the rainbow brigade would enforce the rule that much. I could see why you'd be frowned on for asking for rep...as for typing it...freedom of speech man.

Administrators and Super Moderators can view all of the rep a user has every received, the comment, and who gave it to them. I don't believe Sectional Moderators can, although I never checked in my brief time as one. Administrators are the only ones who can delete rep, although Super Moderators can increase or decrease the amount the rep gives/takes.
