Emo is cutting yourself and planning suicide.

Goth is being dark and depressing.

That's how I distinguish the two.

Do emo's really have a higher suicide rate than non-emo's?

Emo (in my school) means emotional (often times there bi polar, with having very random mood swings) not to mention there very very loud when there togther -_-'', they often are very touchy with there friends, often are very depressed over silly reasons (belive me i know...alot of my friends are emo so i know what im talking about) they often times cut themselvs say very inaporpreate things, make rude comments

Emo is just a short word for emotional... but to me it's when people act like Goths, but are whingy... (no offence) they may or may not cut themselves, do drugs or smoke... Drinking I can see them doing though

actually no ... I found out a few days ago that our family friends son had hung himself... it was quite a shock.. though I have never met him

People think Emos are always cutting themelves. I have proof that says they can be really happy. There is a girl who is emo and she is really happy. If she failed a test, she would be like. "I failed, yes!" Every morning she says high to everyone when she enters. Then someone tells her to shut up. And it keeps going on.

A simple sub-cultural fad among many teenagers, often associated with the music genre from where the term came from. Sadly, the term EMO in music really means nothing since any genre of music is capable of having emotion in it.

well its supposed to mean Emotional, but now adays its more of a fashion and music statement than anything else. it used to be more about expressing yourself through pain and sorrow but then it became over popular and now 9 out of 10 people that think they are emo are just wanna be's

    In serious terms:
A stereotype made up from the style of rock music emotive. Emotive music was always like average rock, lyrics being a bit suicidal and sometime depressing. Somehow, people started to put into a trend, almost branching off from the classic goth. The stereotype got bigger and bigger, eventually breaking what really "emo" was.

If you cut your wrists for attention nowadays, you're considered 'cool' and 'emo'. You can tell when this is going on because the person will slash in random cut on there arms, while someone SUICIDAL cuts straight down the wrist. =/

I think 'emo' is just totally bogus and immature.

What really pisses me off is when people say that emo's cut themselves.

People with mental problems cut themselves, or some stupid people who think it is "cool" to cut. Being emo has nothing to do with it. Really, having people checking your wrists every so often in school is really annoying ._.

I see emo as meaning emotional. Whether it is positive and/or negative emotions.

Emo is an arrogant notion individuals place on each other in order to feel either more or less accepted. It's an abuse of the word "emotional," and takes it to stereotypical levels. Essentially anyone who is sad all the time is immediately referred to as "emo," or so I notice. It is the result. Nothing more.

Emo was meant as a music genre type that has emotional aggressive expression to it. It was a break off from gothic and alternative.

However, it has since grown to be used to describe a certain type of people that are seen as over-emotional in the negative emotions and seem down on life, pessimistic and tend to not like themselves much or very little else. It's become a stereotype phrase to use on anyone who is negative to things, wears darker colors and gaudy attire, and who is extreme in not wanting to fit in with others but others like themselves. Stereotypes are dangerous things though so I -try- to not cater to this one, though some people can make it difficult to not label them as they seem to fight to be a stereotype instead. I will say though that I never judge them just on appearance because anyone is more than just what they wear or have tattooed or pierced.

There are some who people would classify as emos who are cutters, but it's not always the case. Also, many people labeled as emos are thought that they will commit suicide more often than others. I don't really think so, though those I see as spree killers often are manic depressed when news comes out about them and I'd freely call them emo, despite the lack of 'proper attire' because of what the word means to me. I don't think those who call themselves emo though are more likely to commit suicide. They are just angry at the world or things going on about them and some generally have problems that are real, despite the fact that others seem to be from well to do families and backgrounds. There are also some people that are just really depressed and/or angry at everything and feel choked down by a lot and put themselves in bad situations because of their outlook and people automatically label them as emo, which may not be right and instead the person just needs a friend or something positive to happen that they take notice of.

I tend to use the word to mostly describe someone who is very depressed and complains about stuff all of the time when it isn't that bad, or they dug a hole for themselves and won't even try to get out of it but make sure to tell everyone how miserable they are. I'm sure everyone has met those sorts of people where you say a problem that's serious and someone cuts you off and goes into how miserable they are, but the problem is just not even as serious, like this one time I said I had gotten wounded and had to go to the hospital and get stitches, and next the person interrupts me as I'm explaining the wound was infected to say that his cat scratched him and he's annoyed and hates it. I do know where the word stems from and to some degree like some 'emo' music because who isn't mad now and then or upset? But I have to confess I use the word itself more to convey someone who is always chronically depressed and seems to be selfish and focused on only him/herself because there just isn't another easy word to do so.

Like Bunterx, it also pisses me off.

IMO a Emo is someone who distances themselves from other because they want attention. Cutting yourself is not emo, it a mentality problem.

    There's a diffrence between these:

    GOTHIC
    DEPRESSED
    EMO

    Gothic is dark.

    Depressed is extremely sad.

Emo to me is when you take those two things, mash them up, and add cutting.

But I honestly dont like stereotypes like that and I won't lable you if you cut yourself, I'll ask you what's wrong. I think most people that tell others they cut themselves are only crying out for attention and asking for help in their own way.
