I'm not really sure this topic belongs here, but other then the "Anything Else" section, I can't think of any other place to discuss this.
Remember getting up on Saturday morning, and turning on the TV and what do you usually find? Tom & Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tex Avery cartoons, etc. Those were some of the best cartoons ever made. They had so much life. So much personality. So much heart and soul. Now, when we get up on Saturday, what do we find? Rude jokes, constant pop culture references, and way too much dialouge. What happend? What went wrong? I can't find myself sitting through any kind of animation they make today. Some people right now might be thinking the only reason I love the classics is only becuase that was the stuff I simply grew up on, and I enjoy them for pure nostalgia reasons. This is not true at all. There are some cartoons I grew up on as a kid, and they just don't hold up. Some examples include the Pluto cartoons, Chip and Dale, and most Mickey Mouse oldies. But those are the only exceptions. All the classic Tex Avery, Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Woody Woodpecker still crack me up. And now I appreciatte them even more as important films, not just kids' fodder.
So, to put it plain and simple, what happend to cartoons? I really hope this topic does'nt cause much controversy.

Cartoons are dead, basically. The good ones anyway. But seriously, the fact that you enjoy the oldies and not the new ones has NOTHING to do with you.

Kids change man, with every generation, personalities, looks, fashion, fads, EVERYTHING changes. Cartoons are for children, and with the new generation of children, comes new cartoons with different ways of being funny and cool and wonderful for children. Animators and cartoonists want to be succesful, right? So They're going to make what their fans want. Their fans these days love the stuff they make, and hate the oldies. For the rest of us, there's boomarang, anime, and adult swim..

I agree with everything you're saying except that cartoons are for kids. Cartoons were never intended for children during the golden age. They were simply made for anyone. When people like Tex Avery, Bob Clampett, or Chuck Jones were making cartoons, they went with what they thought was funny, not children.
Anyways, I think you are right about everything else.

Cartoons are getting more violent and more entertaining. I don't like it. I liked thee oldies but I didn't see it a lot since I was born in 1995, they showed Spongebob which is getting more violent. Rocko's Modern Life was my favorite.

Bugs Bunny was taken off air due to Bugs being racist. Donald Duck was in Nazi cartoon's, so they took those off. I don't know about the others. I guess they took Rocko off because it was made by M.T.V.

They'll probably put them back sometime when they relize today's cartoons is making kids violent. Some I like myself, Naruto, Fairly Odd Parent's, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ed, Ed, and Eddy(Which is due to be take off air.), I don't watch them a lot, I watch other stuff like Ginga Densetsu Wiido, but thats more violent and isn't a kid's show but I know its not going to get me violent.

Point is all cartoons are getting violent, rude jokes, racism, addicting, sex, inspiring. And not inspiring like "Oh, I wonder if I could do that when I get older." As in "I'll do this is some one f---- with me."

Kids, are learning new words, and they aren't good. They've even talked of Sex in kids cartoons, which is just wrong.

It's because of Dora the Explorer... she is the down fall of all societies. Trying to teach little American kids spanish before they even hardly know english. :/

But I know some cartoons these days are going a bit too far. Yet... I do agree with Cin; each generation is different.

Maybe there is still hope for the children of tomorrow.... maybe some hopeful new animator will go back and reference the works and talents of great creators like Chuck Jones.

Amen to that! (lol) I miss the the cartoon era of 1993 (My birth date) to 2002 ,i call that cartoons' golden age. By that time CN was pinnacle of the best mixture of anime' and western cartoons (I <3 Tenchi Muyo!!) plus none of them were repetitive like now...there's almost nothing original on TV.

P.S. I think someone should call the department of homeland security to handle dora, her and that stupid monkey have gone to far!! J/K

Its sorta sad because I used to remember waking up early on saturdays just to watch the cartoons.

I used to watch Dexters lab all the time when I was little, and this week my friend and I were watching TV and we saw it and lots of other shows on Boomerang and she threw a fit because she was so mad that kids wouldnt watch it anymore. It makes me sad...

What Cin said pretty well wraps it up neatly. I tend to just watch Cartoon Network if I watch anything on TV anymore. They have old shows and new ones and Adult Swim is great, most of the time. Saturday mornings definitely are not what they used to be and I can say I can't even stand the artwork of half the cartoons anymore that I have seen on Saturday mornings. Also, there is a ton of propaganda and there appears to be a lot more commercials so that I ponder if cartoons that are for 30 minutes get even 15 minutes of air time. The voices of the characters too gets to me.

In the end, maybe cartoons went to hell, or we are just too old or different to sit in on those newer cartoons now. Makes me feel like a relic and I suppose I'll worry more about the 'content' when I have kids to feel it is necessary to do. I sure don't waste time on that stuff. Then again, I am hardly ever awake when those awful shows are on.

    And seriously.

    Pokemon used to be good.

    Pokemon used to be love.

But no.... They went and added on 2 billion more seasons, changed the voices of the charactors. I actually turned it on the other day and had to turn it off right away because I just couldnt listen to Ash's voice. It was sad.

I agree. Cartoons are getting too violent and such. I mean, I turn it on the other day and they're talking about FRIGGIN GUNS! I was like, O.O. :O, "TURN IT OFF RIGHT NOW!" And they were like, "That happens all the time." I turned it off and they started screaming and whining like total brats.
Cartoons have too much crude humor, violence, and... are just plain stupid. I agree with AerithRose. Pokemon use to be good, but nooooo. They had to change the voice-actors, people, characters, and stuff in general until it was junk.
Cartoons are horrible these days. TT^TT

I remember the cartoons I used to watch...but I'm probably not as old as some of you and really didn't get to see as much Looney Tunes and stuff like that....

At 4 I watched Barney (sigh) and Power Rangers. When I got older at 7 I watched Gargoyles, Batman, Spiderman, The X-men, beast Wars, old tapes of The Transformers and G.I. Joe. Some of those are pretty old and still kinda violent. (Transformers and G.I. Joe) but they aren't the same as all of the new cartoons....

Then again I only pretty much watch anime now, so....

I sort of miss when cartoons were actually tolerable. I knew they would go downhill the day that Spongebob premiered on Nick. The first couple episodes I admit were funny...but then it just got to be annoying.

I remember watching what I consider to be the 'Golden Age of Nick'. Shows like Angry Beavers, Rugrats, Hey Arnold etc. Those kind of shows were funny while still not being outright idiotic. Only show on Nick I watch now is Fairly Oddparents.

Other cartoons I used to watch were X-men, Gargoyles, Tiny Toons, Animaniacs those kind of shows. I miss those cartoons.

Now it's cartoons appealing to a new generation. Most of the animators create these shows aiming at the 'tweens' meaning the kids aged 8 - 12. (It happens with clothing companies too.)

I think the only reason you all hate cartoons is because you have outgrown them, not because they suck.

Kids these days will look back on the cartoons they're watching now in 10 years and say "God, that was awful, I can't stand cartoons!" Every following generation will do the same. You have all just outgrown cartoons and think they all suck except the ones you watched. Toddlers now will say the same when they are your age.
