What do the KH names mean?

Well since their names are Japanese I know that they mean something. For instance Sora means sky. At least I'm pretty sure. Do you know any meanings?

 

I think Sora means "Light" or something else

 

Sora means sky i think...cuz light is Hikari or Hikaru

 

Are you asking about what the other's names mean?

The trio in Destiny Island have Japanese names, while the keyblade warriors we get to see in Birth By Sleep seem to have Latin names:

Sora = Sky
Kairi = Ocean/Sea
Riku = Land

Ven = Air
Aqua = Water
Terra= Earth

or are you asking about the deeper meaning with the choise of names or if there's a type of connection?

I didn't know the people in BBS had latin names! That means I'm not alone with one of my nicknames (Ven) and my real name, which is in Welsh!

 

Yeah that's right, but Nomura stated that Ventus is his full name while Ven is a nick name

 

Yeah, Ven is wind. Terra, Ven and Aqua, represent the 3 elements (Earth, Wind, Water)

 

Sora: Sky
Kairi: Sea/Ocean
Riku: Shore

^^^they're all from Destiny Islands so their names connect to water.

Terra: Land
Ven(tus): Air/Wind
Aqua: Water

^^^BBS takes place before any of the kh events...most likely TVA are gone or dead by the time kh1 starts.
Latin is a gone and "dead" language.

Notice the similarities?

 

Just a correction: If we consider Kairi as a Japanese origin, it on its own does *not* mean Ocean/sea.

"Kairi" specifically means Ocean/Sea Village if you write it in the appropriate characters: 海里
海 'kai' meaning "Sea/Ocean"
里 'ri' meaning "Village"

海 if written on its own can still mean sea/ocean, but it would be pronounced 'umi' instead of 'kai', so it'd be impossible for "Kairi" to mean sea/ocean as it is.

 

I think now I'm more confused then ever.

Latin Origin:

Aqua = Water
Terra = Earth
Ventus = Wind

And just for silly comparisons:

Sora/Ventus = Sky/Wind
Kairi/Aqua = [Sea/Ocean] Village/Water
Riku/Terra = Land/Earth

Pretty sure most have seen this connection already.

Terra and Aqua are fairly obvious. I had to look up the other four.

 

I like how they get the names like that, and have all these little interesting things behind them..

Is there any meaning behind the name namine?

 

Yeah, I believe Namine comes from "nami", meaning wave (or something to do with the ocean). Given that Kairi can mean "sea" or "ocean", it's a reference to how Namine is part of Kairi.
