simple. Its a sideways smiley such as (: or D:
X = the eyes, they are closed tightly
D = the smile. Seeing that you are laughing or your mouth is open

XD or the way I type it, xD (which is the same) means your laughing so hard that you're crying, but closing your eyes to hide the tears.

The more D's you add, the harder you're laughing.

IE: xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

That is pretty much the way i use it, i use it when i find something funny, it is the new 'lol' for me XD

 

I use it when something makes me smile or happy. XD
