Because my mom always gets upset when I am uploading and wants to be on the computer, I wanted to ask why the Internet slows down when someone is uploading videos on YouTube. My mom believes it shouldn't happen, and I honestly don't understand it myself.

    Thanks in advance!

There's this thing called bandwidth. The best analogy I can think of is a busy street--when there are a lot of cars on the street, you're going to be moving slower, due to all the traffic. When there aren't a lot of cars on the street, you can go pretty much as fast as you'd like (of course there are speed limits). Uploading a video to YouTube is like a busy street--because you're sending so much data over your internet connection, there's a lot of traffic there, so everyone else might notice speed drops. Once the upload completes, however, the speed will return to normal.

If this is a constant problem for you I would recommend running a Speedtest. Make sure you're getting the speeds you pay for from your ISP; if that's not enough, you may want to consider upgrading your service.

Yeah, it's not always slow, only when uploading, unless I misread what you said. For example, loading a page here usually takes a second or two, and when I'm uploading, it's about 10 or more seconds.

My mom was curious about one thing, though. Is it the modem or the Internet? She's been thinking of getting her own modem to overcome the latency.

Edit: Here's a speed test result.

It's probably the internet. If you're using wireless internet, then you can get a new router, which will help a little. However, if you're connect directly using a wire, than that's the fastest it will be.

We're using wired Internet. We have a cable from the plugin jack on the wall to the modem and then Internet cables from the modem that go to my computer and my mom's computer.

Its your ISP. Uploading speed is always a lot slower than your downloading speed (Unless you have an excellent ISP and a lot of cash). Connections and modems will effect the speed but its really down to your ISP and the connection they give you. My suggestion to you is to upload videos when she's not planning on using it. Unless you get a better deal or connection with your ISP it won't get much faster than that.

This. Ask your mom to speak to your ISP, and they might have a deal going on that might boost your interenet speed. I just got a boost from 35mbps to 45mbps, so it's possible that your provider might be able to do something similar for an additional fee.

Buying a new router or modem wouldn't make really any difference, unless you perhaps upgraded to Gigabit, but that would require replacing probably all your networking devices (including the cards on your computer) and even then you probably wouldn't notice a difference. The only way you could fix this would be to (as was mentioned) upload when she's not using the computer, or upgrade your connection.
