NOTE: BEST IF YOU BEAT 3rd CHAPTER NOTE: This is a prelude one-shot. “Daisukenojo!” “For the last time, it’s Beat!” Daisukenojo, also known as Beat, was sitting on his bed as his parents were yelling at him. His Father ignored the correction and continued on. “I can’t believe you skipped school again. This is the fifteenth time this year! How do you expect to make it past school?!”. “What are we going to do with you?” Beat’s Mother inquired through sobs from behind her husband. “Where will you go when you leave the house?”. “There’s no place for this boy to go,” Beat’s father answered furiously, “‘cause he just doesn’t want to do anything. He doesn’t have a goal, future, or even a dream!” “Why can’t you be like your Sister?” Beat’s mother cried. “At least she does well in school, and is striving to be a writer.” “Leave Rhyme out of this,” Beat argued. Outside of Beat’s room, a young girl leaned against the closed door. The door wasn’t very thick as should hear the argument as if it was right next to her. She slid down the door until her chin was tucked between her knees. Tears formed in her eyes as she heard her parents degrade her brother. She wiped her eyes with the sleeve of her oversized sweatshirt, but still the tears flowed. This was not the first time she had heard Beat getting yelled at by their parents, but she couldn’t help cry every time she heard the raised voices. Her parents didn’t understand Beat like she did. Being Beat’s sister, Rhyme saw the real Beat. Beat was hot-headed and thick skulled, but he was also determined, caring, and funny. Her parents just couldn’t see his pros; only his cons. “I do have a goal, yo! I’m gunna’ be one of the best skateboarders out there!” Suddenly, Rhyme was knocked away as the door was slammed open with Beat running out of the room. “Get back here, boy!” his father called after him. Hurt from getting slammed, Rhyme tried to stand up. “Nii-san...” She ran after her brother. When Rhyme went out the front door, she saw that Beat took his skateboard with him. Rhyme grabbed her scooter and raced down the street after him. Beat took a break from running at Miyashita Park. He needed to cool down and try to think; something he didn’t do too often. If his parents completely gave up on him, he should just run away. No one will miss him. Suddenly, the thought of Rhyme popped in to his head. She was the only one who liked him just the way he was; the only person who really recognized him. Beat could feel tears falling down his cheeks. “Nii-san!”. Rhyme’s voice reached his ears. Oh no! Rhyme shouldn’t see him in such a pathetic state. Beat tried to dry his eyes, but tears continued to flow. “Nii-san!” “Dammit!” Beat ran away towards the Miyashita Park Underpass. “Nii-san! Wait!” Rhyme panted as she rode her scooter behind Beat; closing in. Beat was skateboarding across the street of the underpass when suddenly he heard the blast of a car horn. He felt the world in slow motion as he looked back. Rhyme had been trying to follow him and ended up in the way of an oncoming car. Beat jumped off of his skateboard and dived towards his little Sister. The car’s breaks screeched, and then everything went black… “I’m alive…?” There was the sound of a crowd. Many voices filled the air around Beat as he woke up to see the crowd’s feet walk around him. Where was he, he wondered. “Yo, what a headache…” Beat slowly got up to get a better view of the seemingly unfamiliar area. What was this place? Where was Rhyme?! He whipped his head around and caught sight of his little Sister who was laying on the ground unconscious. “Rhyme!” He ran over to her. “Yo, Rhyme, wake up.” He started to shake her. “Rhyme, don’t go trippin’ out on me, yo!” Beat was about to cry again when he felt Rhyme stir awake. She slowly opened her eyes and looked into her Brother’s eyes. His eyes were filled with tears of joy. Rhyme gave Beat a smile. “Hello, it’s nice to meet you.”
Awwr, man, that was heartbreaking. Should have opened it with Beat explaining to Neku about his family problems though. At least it gives a bit of an introduction or something like that. Anyway, that's just what I think. Nice read though.
