Turn-Based RP Interest Thread

    Only one RP around here that I know of has been very successful with turn-based combat. I'm intent on making an RP of my own with that mechanic.

    For those of you who don't know what I mean, I'm talking about stats and leveling up in an RP. A definite pro to this system is the fact that it keeps people from powerplaying and godmodding. That being said, here's the gist of what I have in mind for a story:

    There would exist a chalice with the power to grant any wish so long as an appropriate sacrifice could be made. This sacrifice could range from your belongings, to your own body, to even the life of another. Your wish will be granted, but you would become a monster. Sorcerers, humans born with magic, would be sent out to defeat these monsters and kill them once they showed their true form. These sorcerers could, however, chose to spare the person and allow them to live normally once more. This is against their code but doing so could be ignored by their organization. Breaking the code too many times though would cause other sorcerers to come after the rule-breaker. People who had become monsters are only at risk of making the same mistakes that lead them to become a monster.



    Yes. Yes it is. I never said it was an original story. Plus there won't be any spoilers for the game if you were planning on getting it.

    There will be missions RPers can take up, but that's not the only thing I'd allow for the RP. There's more to it that I'm not giving out at this point in time.

    As for battles and such, people could "level up" in one of two ways. Either by killing monsters or saving them. Both actions result in different abilities and stats. You don't have to solely kill or solely save monsters. It'd be up to you to decide every time you are given a chance.



    There will be weapons! But they'd be based off of magic. They must be summoned. They would have a time limit for how long they can be active! So even if you want a more melee-based character, you can still have that option.



    ONLY MAGIC. There's plenty of kinds of magic! Projectile, weapon creation, summoning, armor creation, healing, and others!



    Sure. There would be five elementals. You could choose to use many spells from one, use a variety, or even go with a nonelemental spell! Fire weapons? Sure! Ice weapons? You can have that too! Stone armor? That's in here too!



    No. The characters aren't students. The organization is just that. An organization. People from around the world send them requests(to exterminate monsters) which other members of the organization can then take on.



    Someone must initiate a battle. Once someone attacks, I'd post with damage calculations and such. Yes, I'd even post whether or not the opposing character(or monster) would have dodged the attack.

    Example:

    Role-Player 1 attacks.

    I post how much damage is done.

    Role-Player 2 reacts and attacks back.

    I post again with the results of this attack.

    That would continue until one character runs out of health or the fight is broken up.



    No, but you can decide if you want to get killed off.



    Interact with each other! Romance if you feel like it. If you save too many monsters, other sorcerers could be coming after you! So you could potentially be on the run. There's more to any RP than just fighting. Even this one.



    So that's what I've got so far. Anyone interested?

    As much as a turned based rp sounds like a good idea on paper, in practice I feel like it would become rather boring on the forum.

    If this were a roleplay for an instant messenger I feel like it would turn out great because it is instant, almost like combat. When on a forum, it would end up being a one liner festival and would end up slow moving.

    It is a good idea though, if a few of the flow flaws were tweaked, I would be interested.

    The only reason I'm even considering this is because Krowley's SoS RP is turn-based. Admittedly, that's a Kingdom Hearts RP so he had the help of having a large fanbase to pull from.

    As for flow of the RP, that'd only apply to battles and yeah...it's kind of hard to find a solution to it. I could potentially drop the turn-based mechanic in favor of something more flexible. Kind of like having "leveling up" but without turn-based battles.

    Actually, I think I might do that if the original idea isn't popular.
