Tokyopop to Close North American Publishing Division

ANN has confirmed with Tokyopop Senior Vice President Mike Kiley that the company will shutter its Los Angeles-based North American publishing division on May 31, 2011. The company's film and European divisions will be unaffected by this closure, and its Hamburg, Germany office will continue to handle global rights sales for the company.

In a post on the website for Tokyopop's America's Greatest Otaku reality web series, the company's CEO, Stu Levy, announced that he will spend the next year in Miyagi, Japan making a documentary about the effects of the March 11 Higashi Nihon Daishinsai (Great Eastern Japan Earthquake) disaster, the proceeds of which will go to support the victims. He also posted a goodbye message on the official Tokyopop website.

May 31 is less than three weeks after the first major feature film based on a Tokyopop property, Priest, will open in American theaters.

Doesn't affect me a whole lot since I don't read many of the series they get, but I know a lot of people are upset about this.

Wow, that kind of sucks. This company has recieved a lot of hate in anime circles (at least the ones that I'm affiliated with) but some of their manga is actually alright. I guess that means I really have to save up if I want to buy some of their manga.
