My Capstone teacher has been harassing me about my essays and stuff, one of which is how Okami set a new standard for art in video games (which is completely true, written without my bias) and he emailed my mom saying how it had "little to do with my project". My project is the history of art in video games. He also is the reason why I'm making a game; my original thesis was that I would make a character design, and maybe a game if I had time. He's turned that into "you have to make a game otherwise your project is pointless". I have explained this to him multiple times but he doesn't get it. I know for a fact my friend has done far less than me, yet he always puts me in the spot during class, but then again he also reads articles on Wikipedia about things I talk about in my essays. So all in all he told me that if I don't get more work done I'll get an incomplete for the quarter, which could get me kicked out from college. tl;dr - my Capstone teacher has no idea what the hell he's talking about and it could pretty much ruin the rest of my life.
Well, if you can't break through the brick wall, go around it. Or, perhaps ignore him(when he rambles, but not apparent ignorance)?
I would personally have to read it before I form an opinion. Talking about how great Okami's art is (even if it is true) =/= History of art in video games. But again I might not fully understand I guess.
Perhaps a second opinion would help. There must be another teacher somewhere that could give such or maybe even talk it over with someone ranking higher than him such as the princible/headmaster/whatever. Hell, you even can try getting a professional opinion by sending a letter/email to someone like Gamestop. Granted the former will have more of a chance of getting a reply, but I doubt he can agrue with the latter. Unless he's that ignorant. Though reptar is right in that reading it first should be done first before I form my opinion... But from what I know Okami has a great art style that doesn't focus on making the game look 'new' or realistic, which more games should do, in my opinion. Stand out from the masses and all.
It was less on how "good" the art was than talking about the unique style and the impact it had on the modern art world of gaming. I also talked about Lost in Shadow and a few other games that've been considered "unique" in terms of art styles throughout gaming. Yeah, I might try that, I'm also gonna talk to my advisor tomorrow too. I just hate that he's BS'd the majority of his "criticism".
Even if you mentioned other games, if a large part of it focused on Okami, then it does seem kind of irrelevant. But, like Reptar said, I'd have to read it to say for sure. As for the whole "you have to make a game thing," yeah it's a bit unfair, but I kind of get where he's coming from. That'd be like planning out characters, a storyline, symbolism, etc etc for a story but never actually writing the story. Even if you BS the game, it's enough to get credit, right? You're already accepted into college and you've got a few months left in the school year (assuming you have until June), make the best of the time you've got. And don't judge yourself by your friend's project & progress, that's not fair to you or him.
