    The story of Agent X

    Chapter 1

“Hey Jack,†Max yelled across the hall. “Are you going to try out that game I told you about?†“Yeah, sure†said Jack, “What’s so great about it anyway?†“Are you serious?†said Max, “I told you like a million times that if you get the high score, you win a prize! I don’t know what it is, but a prize, man! A prize!†“Okay, okay.†said Jack, “Don’t get too excited, you don’t even know what the prize is yet, remember?â€
“I know, I know. It’s just that it’s so fun, and I almost got the high score!†said Max. “Well that’s good, but don’t get addicted or anything, okay?†said Jack. “What would make you say that?†said Max. “Ha ha! You should hear yourself.†said Jack.

    Later that day....

“Hey Mom, hey Dad!†said Jack as he entered his home. “Well, hello there,†said Jack’s dad, “And by the way, ‘hey’ is not how you greet someone.†As you can see, Jack’s dad is a teacher. And it also wouldn’t be surprising if somebody was a teacher, and would be correcting you at any chance they get. “So how was your day at school?†“I’m going to have to get back to you on that, okay? I just have to do something on the computer.†said Jack. “And what would that ‘something’ be? Wait a second; if it has to do anything with that ‘Max’ boy, then you’re not doing anything on the computer. Who knows? He could have told you how to hack. And then where would we be?†Jack’s father said. Jack thought his father was always paranoid, but he also felt he had always hid something from him. He remembered how Max would tell him his dad was sort of mysterious, and he would go: “Jack’s dad is... doo, doo, doo... double O’seven!†He would also chuckle a little bit after saying that. Jack ignored his father’s words and went on to the computer. “Bingâ€, the computer went as he turned it on. After a little while he was on the website that Max had told him about, registering for the membership on the game. One second. Two seconds. Three seconds. Jack waited and waited and waited. Jack said that it would be extremely fast to get membership. Why wouldn’t it load? Maybe the router is screwed up, thought Jack. Looking behind the computer, he noticed that the router was in flawless condition, and was working perfectly. That’s weird. We have the fastest internet there is to have. And yet, it’s super slow. As if on cue, the computer flickered and turned off. Crap! Why now, of all times, thought Jack, when I get the chance to check out what Max was talking to me about! In a matter of seconds, the computer turned back on with an emblem on its screen. Max didn’t tell me about this, thought Jack. On the screen was a symbol that looked like a triangle, a star, and a circle mixed together. WELCOME BACK, AGENT X. Oh no. What have I gotten myself into? Jack shuddered at the thought that he was being watched. Either that, or somebody had used his computer before. But why would somebody use my computer? It just didn’t seem right, Jack thought. The only person who used Jack’s computer was his dad. He couldn’t stand the thought that his dad was some sort of secret agent. It seemed inconceivable that someone as boring as his dad would fulfill the role of a spy. Then again, he had always thought that his parents, not only his dad, had been hiding something. Maybe he just discovered his dad’s secret. All he needed to do now was find his mom’s. This confirmed his thoughts about how they got all their money. Everybody knows teachers don’t get that much money, so it wasn’t his dad. His mom didn’t have a job at all, she “worked†by cleaning the house and serving their meals. It was like this: They had one Audi, one Mercedes Benz, and two Porches. As for games, Jack had a Wii, an XBOX 360, a PlayStation 1, 2, 3, and the new PlayStation Move. He had everything, in his perspective. They even had a pool in the backyard. Maybe their money was from the government. No. That’s stupid. Why would the government give them money? Unless Jack’s theory about his dad being a secret agent was correct, there was no possible way that the government was giving them money. Maybe Dad was good friends with the president. That seemed reasonable. Then another idea entered Jack’s head: What if his dad used to work for the government, retired, became a teacher, and did occasional missions without Mom knowing? That seemed like the most rational answer at the moment so he convinced himself to believe this perception, shut off the computer, and went downstairs for dinner. Jack was prepared for the usual routine questions: How was your day? How did school go? What are you learning at school? To Jack’s astonishment today’s questions went something like: “WHAT DO YOU KNOW? DID YOU GET PAST THE SAFE LOCK PAGE? HAVE YOU BEEN CONTACTED CARMELIA YET?†Jack’s answers were: “What are you talking about? What’s the safe lock page? Who’s Carmelia?†“Don’t you play dumb with me boy. I know you just entered the O.I.S.S database. Now tell me, when you logged on to the website Max told you about, what did the screen say?†“How did… How did you---†“I know about EVERYThat goes on in this house.†said Jack’s dad. “Now tell me, WHAT DID THE SCREEN SAY?!†“It-it said ‘Welcome back Agent Xâ€, said Jack. “Oh god…†“What does it mean? Are-are you Agent X?†“Jack… it’s time you knew… you’re adopted.â€
