At my church, some pretty spooky things happen. Usually they're only mildly spooky. Like, if you leave the sound system on at night, it picks up illegible voices, speaking in quiet undertones below the static. Or how sometimes the ceiling begins to creak and groan, as if it plans to fall down on top of you. Or if you're the last person to leave the basement and you turn out the lights before you leave, you can't shake the feeling that someone's behind you, and you feel sure that if you look over your shoulder as you walk up the steps, you'll see someone peeking from behind the empty doorway, watching you. Or maybe that's just me.

But the really scary thing at my church is the man in the window. You see, the sanctuary has a high ceiling, in fact, it stretches all the way to the roof, held up by high wooden beams, in accordance to the style of the day in which it was built. But the foyer had no such grandeur, and there's a second story over the foyer, with a row of sliding windows that overlook the sanctuary. There's not much space in the second story, we used it for storage for years before we recently converted it into three small offices. We had hoped the sightings would stop then.

    But they didn't.

For the last several years that we've been here, we've had many people glance up at the windows, pale, and then profess to have seen someone standing there, looking out at us, before disappearing. All of them not having heard of the figure before, all of them seeing him in the very same window. We've heard it from people of all sorts, from many different backgrounds, with different pasts. The most recent happened two weeks ago.
I wasn't actually there at the time, but three different people who were have told me the story. They were all in the foyer, church was over, everything was dark. Mostly everyone had gone home, the only people left in the building were my mom, my sister, and my mom's friend, along with her teenage daughter and six year old son.

Suddenly, the boy stood up, saying: "Someone's making some noises in there!" He ran into the sanctuary to investigate, and no one thought anything of it. After a few moments, he came running back in, claiming to have seen a ghost.

"There's a ghost in there!" He said. "I saw it, and then it disappeared!"

Following him into the sanctuary, my mom asked him where he had seen it.

"It was up in that window," he said, pointing to the very same window the man has been in before. "I saw it looking down, and then it disappeared!"

Now, this small boy has been known to tell some tall tales, his adventures in dinosaur hunting are extraordinary. But to have seen the man in the window, in the very place he has been seen before, well, I'm inclined to believe him. Hearing of how he described it later to another adult, he said he saw a Black Man. The adult, misunderstanding, asked if he meant the man had brown skin.

"No," the boy said. "He was Dark."

I have yet to see the man in the window. But I know that one day, when I am not expecting it, I will see a shift in the shadows, a slight movement in the corner of my eye. I will look up, and I will see a dark figure, standing in the window, looking at me, before disappearing. I have no idea what my reaction will be. But I am sure it will happen.

Have you ever seen someone that isn't really there, watching you from behind glass? Have you heard stories of such a creature, so that even though you don't see it, you know there is someone watching you anyway? Did you hear that indiscernible voice from nowhere, humming a tune you've never heard? Did you see the shift in the shadows coming from the window behind you? Did you hear the footsteps from the attic you never knew you had? Don't worry about it. It was probably a car radio, or the people in the house next door playing a song through thin walls. It was probably the wind, blowing a branch against the window. It was probably just the wood settling.

But it might just be that the man in the window is looking down upon you, and no matter how you think on it, there's just no explaining it away.

Whoa..... Creepy, yet true story, bro. But seriously, that's very creepy. Now I'm afraid that something similar would happen to me.
