So, Newsweek is labeling Obama as the first "gay" president. Plenty of controversy with this one. Now the issue is, is this a proper label? Gay can be a pretty derogatory term, depending on it's context. I don't believe that that is the intent of Newsweek (although it was the first thought that came to mind), but it just doesn't make sense to label as such. The president is not a homosexual, and his "coming out" in support of gay marriage doesn't make him gay and neither does simply supporting it make him gay either. If that were the case, I'd be gay and plenty of other heterosexuals in favor of gay marriage would be too. I don't think it's proper to simply give new meaning to a word without context, otherwise it's open to being misconstrued (as is occurring all over the internet). Without context, we don't know what they mean by "gay" and it just hurts them because they are giving their own meaning to an ordinarily derogatory term that is going to mislead it's readership.

you know, I would be saying they could just be talking about gay as in happy, but because it's today's world, and pretty much no one uses the term gay as happy, we all know that's not what they're talking about. However, people shouldn't be labeling Obama as gay just because he supports gay marriage. If that were the case, than how many other people out there would be considered gay, just because they support gay marriage? I sense hate from this, and I'm sure there's more to come. Especially for those that support Obama to a ridiculous extent. Don't know if there really is one, but I'm just saying

maybe they're just saying that he's the only pro-gay rights President? i found that news channels and magazines do this quite a lot with headlines like: is that new app making you fat? no it does not. and there's also the possibility that this is fake though i'm not sure the source of this cover is.

it's on newsweek's twitter, tumblr, and website. it's also on all the news channels and their websites and even minor news websites and even minor blogs. i doubt it's fake.

They probably put that title so they could sell headlines at the newstands. The Daily Show did a joke similar to this ("Obama is the first president to say that he's gay...*turns page*...friendly."). Sure, people who keep up with the news will understand the truth, but there are a few people out there who probably don't know it and will buy just to be doped by the article.

And, I've heard rumors that we've had closeted presidents in the past; social stigma now is very different than five years ago, imagine what it must have been like for Hoover and Nixon (again, these were just rumors I've heard of).
