The Earth is Flat

So, I was looking through Facebook and saw this thing that reminded me of one of the lessons I had last year. My Earth Science teacher told us that the Earth is flat simple as that. If you go to the same school as me you'd know what I mean. :)

 

What the hell kind of school did you go to?

 

It's weird 'cause it's supposed to be a science school. None of us knew how to win in the argument my teacher always found a way to leave us speechless whenever this debate came up.

 

I seriously hope you mean speechless at how dumb your teacher potentially is...

I was in a joke debate with my RA about that.


Science 101 : You only prove something. You never prove that something isn't. (Typical Atheism vs. Religion's debate)

 

Logic 101: You only prove what cannot be. You never prove what is.

 

You can prove that something isn't valid by bringing a counter example. And I assume your teacher told you this because he wasn't expecting you to come up with a counter example and prove him wrong. He didn't think very highly of you lol.

actually he did expect us to counter his statements he just gave better counter statements to counter our statements

Yeah he said that pictures were fabricated and the space program was a hoax. so that didn't work 'cause we had no proof tat it wasn't.

 

Get on a plane and fly in a straight line. You will end up in the same place. Many have done so. Try it if you want.

 

the earth isn't flat in that manner it's like a disc and the equator is the circle within the disc and the disc is surrounded by a giant ice wall known as the south pole and the north pole is the center. so flying in a straight line due to some force which he explained but forgot would just make us fly around the disc

 

You can change your angle at ninety degrees and do the same. Or at forty-five degrees, or twenty degrees. You can do the same in any direction you choose to go.

Planets are different according to him I think that's what he said I can't quite remember. Using the disc theory meant that it would be the center by the way.

 

You are the one making the claim. The burden of proof lies with you. Go ahead.

You have just admitted that it is possible, but are implying that it is too dangerous to prove, therefore you are right. In other words you are trying to discredit evidence and argue your way out of a hole for the sake of saying "I can argue whatever I want" and not "I can be right about this".

Which you cannot. A claim is baseless without evidence. Now, either flying or otherwise, I am certain that both poles have been reached in the past and can be reached again.

 

I am certain about the north pole not so sure about the south pole though

 

By any chance does he believe the world is a flat disk balanced on the backs of four elephants which, in turn, stand on the back of a giant turtle that is swimming through space?

But if it's flat, how come nobody has reached the edge? Also if Antartica is at the centre then explain why flying straight through the north pole means you come out at the other side.
