We were watching The Day After Tomorrow in geography class and it brought up this discussion. Though some elements of the movie were pure Hollywood, there are a number of things that are possible. Like the fresh water messing with the ocean currents. That, in turn, could create those monster storms in either the northern or southern hemispheres (depending on what part of the currents were screwed up). Do you think an ice age like this could happen? Or do you think it's all just Hollywood?
Here's a link to the movie trailer, if you haven't seen it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytG2_WjLPag

It seems possible...I've never seen the movie, but it looks accurate.

I highly doubt it. If something on a "Day After Tomorrow" scale was going to happen, we'd know it. We're not so ignorant of our own planet not to notice that as it was a-brewin'

Oh, my bad. So many people are like, BAD STUFFZ GONNA HAPPN SOON CUZ WE IGNORE DA EARTH.

Could it happen? Maybe, like in hundreds of thousands of years. Unless something speeds up erosion to a point where it can get the fresh water out there to mess up those currents.. would fresh water even mess up currents? It's just water.. wouldn't water follow water currents? o.o

I heard that some scientists something like this will actually happen, but they don't know when.

Absolutely not. That severe of a storm is absolutely impossible according to storms our planet is capable of. Plus, an ice age/flood like that is so unlikely. I could never imagine that being possible whatsoever. lol

Also, ice ages don't cause massive tsunami's. Just throwing that out there. <>

I highly doubt that. It was just a movie, you don't have to take it so seriously.
It doesn't really make sense to me =/
    The movie I mean.

Hmm...I could see a gigantic storm/hurricane happening but doubt there would be an Ice Age that soon because of such a thing. This film is kind of grossly over exaggerated in the effects of such things but it makes for a great movie with the threat of nature. These natural massive disasters always seem entertaining because it's the old fight for existence scenario.

As it is, the ice caps are receding, not increasing, and we are moving out of an interglacial period naturally, albeit I do believe we humans are kind of encouraging it along much faster than it would be were we not adding a lot of CO2 to the atmosphere. CO2 is the real culprit of the greenhouse effect being as bad as it is and we release emissions constantly with it and also need more trees and such to take it in naturally. The CO2 is the reason why the icecaps are melting and if we don't lower it, some predict in the next few decades even, it may be too late to turn back what has been done. The additional water is going to cause worse storms. I don't really see that this could happen though so dramatically as the movie depicts but it would be ugly...though we will have some effects as time goes on because of the actual period we are entering.

Yea there would be some kind of big storm but it would never lead to another ice age!

I believe it will not unless global warming causes that or the cause just like the movie.

I think it´s possible and that eventually it will, happen. The consecuences of the global warming are starting to show, last year in chile it snowed! something that doesnt happen here only in the mountains. So there are starting to be climatic changes, also here the summers are gettng longer, it´s autumm here and wwe still have hot days. So i think something like the day after tomorrow may happen.

The Day after Tomorrow is one of my all time fave movies and when i first watched it i seriously thought it was possible of that happening...
but now i look back and think:
    1. It can't all happen suddenly like it did in the move
    2. WE'RE GOING THROUGH GLOBAL WARMING NOW! (according to the people of aussieland, i dunno bout america >>)

Well, the same exsact thing can't happen, but something of the sorts can. After all, all the fossil fuels we are using are burning through our ozone layer, allowing the suns rays to increase. It is believed that if the ozone layer is destroyed, then we will all die. Not like we would melt very quickly, but the extreme heat would mess with our molocules. I forget exsactly how it works, but I remember watching it on this thing that I have recorded on the most likely way that the world will end, and I hear that it would be quite painful.

ANd to the guy who just said that we aren't that ignorant, you are dead wrong. Most people who pay attention aren't that stupid (such as you and me and others like us), but only 3 weeks ago, the news came out with something that said "There might be proof of global warming", which obviously means that the gov has been denying it, and those who just go by what the government says, well, let's face it, they are absolute idiots, which makes up 3/4 of the worlds population.
