    Er...

The belongs in the movies section...

    And..

it's called that because of the illness the main character of the movie has. You are moving around in parallel universes, not as a sickness, but as an ability. It's complicated.

Something about how even the dainty flap of a butterfly's wings can have an effect on the world...

Like when Ashton Kutcher changed something in the past, it affected the future greatly. :3

Also this should be in the movies section.

Well, they call it that for 2 reasons.

    1. "The flap of a butterfly's wings will start out small but will eventually become a hurricane."

Kinda like the ripple becomes tsunami thing.

    2. The areas of his brain that he uses to tap into his abilites form together and look vaguely like a butterfly.

Yep. It's derived from 'chaos theory' which holds that small variations of any particular instance (terminology being 'system')--given the right leverage and circumstance--may produce large, and sometimes unexpected, variation in the long-term behaviour of the same system.

Apply that to the movie, basically every little thing Ashton tried to do to 'correct' a certain mishap caused even greater damage in the long run. It's quite a dark movie, but I enjoyed it.

that movie creeped me out. i dont want my life changed by some random event. the girl went from commiting suicide to being a popular girl in college, where ashton bashed her brother's face in with a pipe, the she became a..how should i put it in non-vulgar terms? you get the idea.
and its all a butterlfy's fault! ...they look so innocent, until the mess your life up....

*didn't know it was a movie either* I got it from a book, from what I saw was basically the smallest chage, say a butterfly flapping it's wings, can have a huge impact on what happens somewhere else or in the future.

  9. uh... I'm confused. Does it mean like one small, tiny thing can have a huge impact later on?

    Yep.

If you need a different analogy, imagine ripples in a pond. What starts off as a small disturbance in a specific center expands outward by a chain reaction. You could also compare that to evolution (<.<) how millions of tiny micro-evolutions eventually lead to one big macro-evolution.

Well. I think just about everyone who replied to this topic said basically the same thing.

So I suggest we actually discuss The Butterfly Effect instead of letting this thread die.. because I thought it was an awesome film and Ashton was surprisingly good in his role. :]

The storyline was really interesting too.

Some parts kinda freaked me out though.. like when the dog got burned and stuff. T_T Plus that kid really freaked me out. He was so violent. O.O

    oh....poor doggy. now its crispy.
i think it was pretty cool when the *ahem* large, child shoved the metal thing in the kids back. he deserved it for *takes out a notebook*..hmm...lets see.
blowing up a mialbox, womanm and her baby at the same time, beating his sister and the young main character, i forget his name, with a 2by4, burning dogs...the list keeps going

That movie was pretty cool. Some parts were creepy like when they were at the movie theatre and that little kid looked at him with a evil smirk. Now that is one sick kid. Still the movie was pretty interesting. I have to see part 2 still.

Well if you were being beaten every day wouldn't you rebel against everything? XD

And I love the way this movie works. In my opinion...best movie ever. Only because it's such an amazing idea brought into what is thought to be it's reality.

    Amazing. =D
