My schoolis confusing :( I had religion, and the teacher told me that the big bang couldn't have happened because something has to 'bang' against something else to make that big an explosion.

Then I had science, and the teacher told me that the big bang existed, and showed us a video with all the evidence.

Both arguments are valid, and i've always thought the big bang was absolute bull, so i'm leaning towards my religion teacher, but that science video was convincing! I'm confused. What do you think?

Well, everyone always goes on about how bing bang is proved true, but it really isn't.

Big bang is just a theory.

People believes in most things as long as it's not religious :P

Not true. Take a supernova for example, nothing hits a dying star and makes THAT big of an explosion. Big Bang theory is a little odd...but nothing is perfect. The laws of physics can be broken.

I'll confess I don't know much about the Big Bang theory, so I can't really have much of an opinion on it, but I feel I should point out that a "theory" in a scientific context is very different from the general conception of theory that we use day to day.

A theory in the field of science is a principle, or body of principles that attempt to explain a certain phenomenon. It does *not* imply uncertainty. Electromagnetism is a theory, Gravity is a theory, etc. I mostly mention this in topics about evolution, but I think it applies here too.

Protip: don't ever go to someone who deals in philosophy and religion for accurate scientific information. Odds are he probably doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

Science goes against what a lot of us would determine by common sense. Doesn't mean it isn't true.

The problem with understanding the Big Bang is that the laws of physics did not exist when it happened. It created them, but was not created by them. I personally like to think that the big bang was caused by a universe prior to this one collapsing on itself and the resultant collapse exploded, causing this universe. Probably not true, but it makes sense to me. And yea, don't turn to religion for scientific explanations. It's not gonna work. All I know about the big bang came from Steven Hawking's book "A brief history of time" and several other articles and books, read a long time ago, in high school. We can see almost back to it using powerful telescopes, and we can extrapolate to about a few hours afterward, I think, but before that, all our theories tend to break down.

Next time just say to your teacher:

God isn't real because something would have had to put Him there. See what they say to that.

    edit:

Basically sweetheart neither can be proved or disproved, both sides could spend forever (and have spent a very long time already) telling the other that they are wrong. What you choose to believe is entirely up to you.

Except science has that big trump card

    Overwhelming evidence.

Except that evidence can always be countered by religion. You could have the most amazing proof in the world and someone with belief could easily dismiss it.

Religion against Science is an argument that is never going to be resolved. You KNOW I am not religious, but I also know that science is constantly changing and that what we know now isn;t neccessarily what actually IS.

We can dismiss your evidence as easily as you dismiss ours.

Not saying that I do, because I don't. But I'm going to go ahead and say inb4religiousargumentandsubsequentlock.

Anyway, on to making this post relevant. Both sides DO have valid arguments, and it's just the fact of the matter that we will probably never know which is right. The sooner people accept this the better off the world will be.

The Big Bang isn't necessarily a bang or an explosion. It's an expansion of space.

It'd be a little odd if it was called The Big Expansion instead of The Big Bang. And the reason they call it The Big Bang is because this expansion happened in a matter of seconds.

I thought the "Big Bang" theory was discredited

The Big Bang is a cosmological model of the initial conditions and subsequent development of the universe. < Wikipedia.

I've never really studied the Big Bang, so I can't tell you whether or not it's true/false. But here's what I can tell you:

THERE WAS A GREAT BIG BANG.

Yes, I do believe there was one.
