If you had to give up a sense for the rest of your life which one would it be?
    Your second choice?
    Third?
    Fourth?
    Fifth?
    Sixth( if you have one)?
(When I say second choice I mean you just lose you second choice and the other three are still around...)

the reason I ask is that my twin just had surgery and he couldn't smell anything for a while. And it made me wonder what sense I couldn't live without.

    My picks would be
    1. Smell
    2. Taste
    3. Hearing
    4. Sight
    5. Touch
    6. Fashion

I could live without smell, definately, it wouldn't effect much of my daily lifestyle.
I love food too much to not have taste as a factor in my life, but it wouldn't be dramatic for me to not have.
I love music and I sing, so hearing is needed for me to do that, and it gives me a sense of perception of how far away someone is.
I would hate not being able to see the sunset. I feel extremely sorry for the blind. And also I lose a lot of things so finding them would be even harder.
And finally Touch - I would hate to lose the feeling of the ground beneath me, I wouldn't know where I was without looking to see. My arms might as well be in the process of digestion as far as I know if I don't check. What use are the other sense if I don't even know what I'm doing?

    If I had to choose one, I think the most logical choice would be smell. In my opinion, it'd be the easiest to live without, simply because the others are just so very basic that it seems impossible to live without them (to a person who never has had to). I know that it would bring it's share of problems, like not being able to smell food rotting, or something burning, etc etc, but I like my other senses too much. Without sight... well that would just be awful, as would giving up hearing. I'm assuming that if you didn't have the 'touch' sense you wouldn't be able to feel pain? That would definitely be bad. And taste... Well that would be good because I could pretty much eat all of that health food stuff and not have to deal with the occasional unfortunate taste, but I don't think I could go through life knowing I'll never taste chocolate again. ;_;

    Interesting question, though.

I agree with this. I was able to decide on smell pretty quickly, but I can't decide the order I'd rather lose the rest. It's a difficult choice.

Maybe...hearing, if I learned to read lips.

Then...touch. But that's when life will start to seem like hell for me.

Then...taste? This might be interchangable with touch.

    Sight would definitely be last.

I would pick taste as my first choice. As much as I do love many foods, with taste gone I can see an opprotunity for a much healthier lifestyle.
I would never want to lose sight, hearing, or touch. Smell I can live without.

Heh, I never really thought about it like that.
Smell and taste are very closely linked. Losing your sense of smell has a significant effect on your tasting experience too, or so I've heard.
Keeping this in mind, I think I'd discard my sense of smell first. This is for pragmatic as well as personal reasons: I seem to be annoyed by putrid stenches more than I enjoy nice scents.

He Means Me I'm his Twin xD

It's true I lost My senses of Smell and almost lose Taste.

This this this. This Sums up my thoughts and I Certify it It's TRUE.

If you Lose your sense of Smell Like I did. You Won't be able to use taste Completely. You could Recognize if its Sweet, Salty, Acid, Spicy. but nothing more. Ex: If you eat Ice Cream and Juice They Will taste Equally Believe me I was Smell-Taste Less for Six daysu_u

My order to Lose Senses Would be:

    1- Touch
    2- Hear
3- Taste (Be aware that if you lose taste you could Still Smell as Opposite to lose Smell First xD)
    4- Smell and Taste
    5- Sight

    1. Touch
    2. Taste
    3. Smell
    4. Sight
    4. Hearing

Touching and feeling things would be first for me. Don't have a particular reason.

Taste would be second because it might allow me to live a healthier life style and you can still smell properly unlike when you lose smell and you can't taste properly.

Smell would be third because like Styx, I hate bad smells more than I enjoy good ones.

Sight and Hearing tie for me. I can't decide which one is worse. A world of eternal silence or eternal darkness. Both are equally horrible for me.

Anyone who gives up hearing or smell is an idiot; those are the two most important senses.

I would give up taste. Its probably the least important sense.

Yeah, because everyone experiences at least one lethal gas leak in his life.

Your sarcasm sums up my point exactly. Smell can very easily be the difference between life and death.

Not too surprising considered that it's the very purpose of senses. But the smell's importance has been greatly reduced to, like I mentioned, detecting gas or smoke. And since gas leaks aren't all that common (and if they do occur, chances are that there is somebody else in the building to warn you), it's a bit exaggerated to call smell the "most important sense". It is in fact the second least important, after taste.

I'd ditch smell in exchange for a nullification of unpleasant odors and the reduction of taste in order to go for a healthier lifestyle. The slight probability of vented gas is a risk I'd be willing to take.

Unfortunately the human sense of smell is a mere shell of what it might have been for our early ancestors. Sight has become the most depended on of our sense, followed by hearing--but even the former is pretty shoddy at best.

It depends on what losing touch does. Is it complete paralysis? Do I still feel pain?

If you don't feel pain, You still get injured from it. Losing your touch can be dangerous, If you do not even realized you got stabbed, You could just bleed to death.

I could not live without hearing, Hearing no songs is like hell for me. My ipod must always be by my side. Sight, I plan a career in graphic design, so that I also want to keep. Taste, I think I can live without, Like the past post. It may make a better lifestyle.

Honestly, I've been thinking about this for a while, and I would have to choose sight. There are many, many beautiful things to see in life, and it would be a real shame to miss them, but honestly, I could paint a picture in my mind of what things look like using the other senses, as I do with reading. Eyesight can be a pain sometimes, and sight is really just varying degrees of light bouncing off objects.

For my own purposes, the first would be either smell or taste. They're both equal to me. But for safety reasons, I would rather let go of taste first. There are a lot of smells that can tell you to stay away from something; a gas leak or a fire or something. I would imagine taste would be more beneficial back when people lived off the land, and needed to taste things to judge whether it is good to eat or not. Now, it's not needed so much.

    After those two, probably sight.

    Then touch.

Then hearing. Life would totally suck if I couldn't hear. I love hearing things. <3

Probably i would give up touch first since i have an abnormally low pain tolerance. then probably taste since most things usually taste the same for me. i couldnt lose my sight...ever since without my sight all of my skills would be worthless. same with smell and hearing since i need those to survive. Also cant give up my fashion sense either :3

    My picks would be:
    1. Smell.
    - Honestly, I don't mind too much about not being able to smell some things again as it isn't such a big deal for me. I would feel upset though if people could smell a nice roast cooking and I'm the only one who couldn't be able to at least gain a basic concept of the meal through scent but overall, not that much of a problem.
    2. Touch
    - Its quite a scary thought really, to not be able to feel something. Like your walking on thin air or when you get punched really hard you don't feel any form of pain. Plus you'd never be able to feel the smooth touch of soft, cuddly toys again. Although there are some bad things about it, I can somehow picture myself as not being able to feel. But it depends on what parts of the body, and how bad is it?

    3. Taste
    - Now this is one of the things I can barely imagine living without. I love the taste of food. Marshmellow fluff spreads, Spaguetti Bolognese, Sunday roast, Chinese Stir Fry... The list is endless. But I think that having the odd bad taste of food taken away would be alright.

    4. Hearing
    - Music is a beautiful thing, and I absolutely adore sounds playing out in general. If I had to live without it I'd only be ok if I didn't hear things such as people who cannot sing at all or drills.

    5. Sight
    - Now this is definately one thing I cannot live without whatsoever. Its so beautiful to see the sunrise and the sunset, and also seeing awesome art other people draw. I don't know... its the whole concept of seeing I cannot live without.

    6. Memories

Very interesting question, I must admit. c:

As a person with compromized sight since I was born, I know how valuable sight is, and I would never give that up, but if I had to give up something, it would probably be taste.
Like other people have said, it could lead to a healthier lifestyle.
