ok, i dont know if this thread goes in the debate corner or not, but if a mod sees this and decides its not in the right place could they please move it. thanks, and im sorry if i put this in the wrong place.

Anyway, swear words. ok, so we all know that well, swear words are bad, and the use of them gets you into trouble. Examples include sledging in sport(i think its illegal) and this site(sara and the rest of the mods go crazy at you if you swear).

What I find strange is that we made up all these swear words, and suddenly we're saying their bad to say. I don't get it, why do people make up these words if they tell people not use them?

Um, sorry for any incorrect punctuations or spellings, I'm only using one hand, as my other arm's in a sling.

Well, I like to think of them as scentence power upper things, not as bad.
    Example:
HOLY CRAP LOOK AT THAT FREAKING BUILDING!
HOLY **** LOOK AT THAT ****ING HUGE BUILDING.
I would say that scentence 2 stands out more.
But people use them to insult eachother.... and you could replace **** with crap and it would hold the same meaning >.>
No clue what i'm getting at.

Well, saying 'you *****!' is not exactly the most flattering thing to say. Most people curse out of anger or because they've been exposed to that type of language 24/7.

I personally don't swear because of the way I was brought up, but I sometimes find it hard to get across the severity of what I'm trying to say. But it also means that when I do swear it has much greater effect than someone who swears all the time.

Many swear words just appeared TBH, as with a lot of other words. Other's were reasonably innocent and then were hijacked, such as the word for illegitmate child and female dog.

I think if used sparingly it adds the correct amount of emphasis, unfortunately IMO people either way over-use it or don't use it at all.

I think it's all to do with the middle ages, I think if a person said a swear word then people would they was a witch but I'm not 100% sure on it

oh yeah maybe, because maybe the people thought that when the so-called witches swear, they are saying some sort of spell, which of course made the people be afraid of them.

    Oh boy...long post ahead...Dx

By the way guys...all these censors are strange. I'll allow swear words in this thread as lon as they are used as examples, not in acuall debate.

Swear words, or curse words NEVER started as such. Bitch is a pregnant female dog, it was a word used to describe the way pregnant dogs acted. People made a connection between the ay some female humans acted, and the way the dogs acted, and so the insult "bitch" was born.

Fuck is actually derived from the german word: Fricken. I'm not sure of the actuall meaning, but long ago, during the middle ages, people would go to germany, hear the word, and come back to THEIR country using it to curse others. Eventually, through English's way of perverting words from other languages, fricken became fuck.

******* is the slang term for an illegitimate child, or someone without a father. Being born without a father is the hugest dishonor for not only the mother but the child as well. During the middle ages, the mother would often be excluded from society and pronounced a whore, while the child was called the child of a whore, and therefore giving the same amount of respect. To call someone a *******, in no matter what time period, is an insult.

Shit...well that's poop, everyone should know that. It's just a slang term for feces.

Ass was the term for a mule or donkey, as most of you know. Comparing someone to a mule is an insult.

    Hell is self-explanitory.

All other swear words are either derived from sexual organs or sexual acts, and therefore will go un-explained for now.

As you can see, all the swear words listed above began with bad meanings, but were never meant to be insults. People created the words as a way to describe unpleasent things, not unpleasent people. But in the end they were used that way, to "curse" people. If you accused someone of bing a ******* or something, for example, it was thought that you had cursed them. By either sending them to hell for the accusation, or hexing them like a witch. The words were outlawed by people way back when for these very reasons. Carried down through the generations, most people nowadays don't like the words at all, the hatred for the "words of curse" still exist.

But in my opinion, the words are just words. If people stopped freaking out about them, they wouldn't be swear words at all. The people who are insulted by them are the ones who put the power behind them. No offense, no power. That's the way it is with any words. But if you walked up to someone and called them a sandwich, and they were offended by it, congrats, you've just succesfullyseen how swear words were created. Good intentions, bad outcomes.

I don't really like swearing. I only do when I'm trying to emphasize something and make an important point. Or when I'm mad. But besides that swearing for the heck of swearing I don't do. But the thing is I'm fine with others around me swearing. Because I'm not just gonna tell my friends you can't do that. They wouldn't listen anyway.

Meanings of words have been lost in translation for centuries by people using them in different contexts. This applies to all words, take the word fat, or phat. Personally don't like the way it is used as phat, but it has been made out to mean that a said object is cool, compared to meaning someone who is big. These words are not so much created to mean something bad, but the meanings of many words has been changed around, if someone calls you an ass, they are refering to the fact that you are being rude or a jerk, but we all know the true meaning of the word. Things change over time words are no different.

I'm sorry I'm not good at following the rules. JK! I see. Well over the years the otherwise harmless words have become offensive. If you look back in time you'll see insults were more creative not usually one word. They combined many things in their their culture that were gross and called people those things. That is probably where some of these swear words originate from.

I swear quite a lot in "real life" and on forums that allow such things. I've never considered it to be immoral, and I don't really give a damn whether anyone else does.
    Not necessarily.
Often nowadays, people use swear words for emphasis, like "That's ****ing awesome!" or "This is god-damn pathetic."
I doubt there are very many people anymore in this generation who would actually take offense at someone swearing at them.
There's a difference between an extremely ******ed insult, and a swear word.
