Can someone explain this to me a bit?

SM lets your play imported games, correct? Can someone give me a link? D:

And how do I 'mod' my PS2? I'm importing FM+, so, yeah.

    Thanks o:

Swap Magic is a software mod, meaning it functions as a modification tool for your PS2, but doesn't do anything physical to your hardware. This is why this type of mod appeals to many people over the soldered modchip because it keeps your warranty intact in exchange for just a few more steps (i.e. swapping).

What's important to know is that Swap Magic will not work on its own, meaning you'll require something like the Slide Card for all PS2 versions up to V11, and Slim Tool Pro/Magic Keys for V12-16 (Keep in mind that earlier versions of Slim Tool Pro only works for V12 PS2s, Slim Tool Pro V3 can work for V13+ but most stick with Magic Keys II). Magic Keys II is usually what many people go for if they have V13-16, but it works for V12 as well.

I only know the procedure for PS2 slims, so I apologize if your console isn't part of the slimline series.

How to 'mod' your PS2 slim using this scheme consists of first installing the three tools you receive from Magic Keys II/Slim Tool Pro. One tool is placed by the bottom right of the disc tray over the Reset/Power area, another is used for the disc break, and the last piece is placed in the hinge located at the top left of the disc tray.

Magic Keys II Website (Directions and demo video is on there)
Directions for Slim Tool V3 (For V13+) (However, the process for Magic Keys II is very similar)

Swap Magic itself can be googled, as it's sold by many different suppliers. Many have combos featuring Swap Magic + Magic Keys II/Slim Tool Pro.

My PS2 is two years old, I got it two summers ago. Any idea what tools I would need? :/

I think your best bet would be to check out the swap magic site.

    SCPH 70012... that's probably a version 12.

You can actually take advantage of two different types. The V12 is actually less cumbersome than the V13-16 because there isn't an extra metal plate blocking the way of where the third piece (usually denoted as Tool C) goes (the one at the top left of the disc tray).

    You can use:
Slim Tool XCM Pro V3 - You can buy this as a combo w/ Swap Magic 3.6 at thegiantstore.com--although there are many other sites out there, I just named one.
Magic Keys II (which I linked in an earlier post)
Magic Switch Pro V2/V3. (However, I don't recommend this as V2 voids your warranty and V3 is pretty much the same as Magic Keys II).

My suggestion is to go for Slim Tool XCM Pro V3, or any tool set that isn't using the tedious modified Tool C (the Tool C referenced in this link). This is because as you have the V12, you don't need to bother using this modified tool (which has been claimed to be a lot harder to install).

To be sure, make sure to check your slim to see if it has this metal plate indicated by the red arrow. However, judging by your SCPH model #, I doubt it does.

If it indeed doesn't have it, then you can go ahead and use the Slim Tool XCM Pro V3 and use these tools/instructions.

EDIT: Just so you can compare, Tool C in these instructions serves the same function as Tool B in these instructions. Like I mentioned before, that notorious Tool C has been said to be a lot more difficult to install (it was made to compensate for that metal plate addition in later versions of the PS2 slim). Since you probably don't have that metal plate, this Tool C is not going to be used for yours, and instead you can use the Tool B in that other instruction guide--which is far easier to do.

    That was extremely helpful. Thanks.

    +rep for you.

Also, it turns out the swap I initially was going to order--Slim Tool XCM Pro V3 + Swap--was the right one. ;)

Thanks for the help posts, but wait, does my PS2 HAVE to be slim? D:

Otherwise I still can use the Japanese PS2, but I'm not sure if I need a Jap controller, memory Card, etc. >_>

Nope. If you own the PS2 V1-11, you can use the Slide Card method (or the Flip-Top method, but that voids your warranty), however, I have no idea how those work so you'd probably have to do your own research or wait until someone here knows how to work one. But no, you don't have to own a slim to use Swap Magic.

If you decide to use a Japanese PS2, you don't need a Japanese controller (although if you buy one new, it should come with one anyway) or a Japanese memory card. I have all my US/JP memory saves all on the same PS2 memory card (bought and purchased in NA).

The only purpose for a Japanese PS2 is to read the Japanese PS2 discs. Here in NA, PS2 games are Region 1, whereas in Japan, their PS2 games are Region 2.

Just remember that if you buy a Japanese PS2, you're still going to need to 'modify' it to play NA games (Region 1) on it.

    Where to buy?

I was just wondering, but where would be a good place to find/order a Japanese PS2? Ebay isn't being very helpful and has minimul search results.
