Well, the best thing you can do is figure out your price range. As with all computers, there are models across the board. How much are you willing to spend? If you've got a deal with your parents, how much are they willing to put up? Do you have any money to contribute?

    Also:
What will you use the laptop for, primarily? Do you do any gaming, video or image editing?
What's a good screen size for you? (they're typically between 14" and 18", though you can get larger if you really want to)
Are you willing to buy online, or do you want to buy from a store? I usually like to go to stores for computers, but that's just me. If so, what electronic stores are nearby?

Yeah, like Misty's saying, some more info. And whatever you do, don't get a Mac, because it's extremely overpriced.
And if you want a smaller screen, keep in mind that the keyboard will be smaller.
I've always been a fan of the 17" or 19" screen.
As far as Brands, I'd absolutely recommend Lenovo. Lenovo is IBM's new name, and everyone who has ever owned an IBM at any time knows they are incredible!
Over the last years I've had several laptops; I would NOT recommend ANY Acer computer; they are cheap, but in my opinion, you can't use it for anything!
Lenovo is the best computer I've had over the last years, definitely. (Though it's a bit expensive)
