im not sure if this has been talked about, but let me get this straight...both sora and kairi were "heartless" all throughout kh1 and 2? I mean, he reformed with roxas in the very last world...i can understand why kairi didnt go all "glowing eyes and claws and such" because of her power as a princess...but sora...he has darkness in his heart...why didnt he become a heartless? Is nomura saying that people without hearts dont have to be heartless or nobodies..? or is this just some huge plot hole?

Sora turned into a heartless in kingdom hearts 1, Kairi saved his punk'd ass, and now he has a heart again, Sora had her heart hostage, then he released it, thus causing what I just said. End of my ******ed discussion >:i)

In KH1, Sora DID become a Heartless. He was brought back to his true form when his heart interacted with Kairi's. Roxas still existed, though.

In KH2, he doesn't become a Heartless, but his Anti-Form is close to it.

.......okay here we go. I'll start with Sora first.
In kh1 sora lost his heart (in hallow bastion or sumthin) and he created a heartless and a nobody. The nobody was obviously Roxas and you get to play as the heartless and wander around in hollow bastion a bit untill a cutscene happens. And Kairi realizes that the heartless is Sora and for some reason he gets is body back and turns normal. Although he is still missing Roxas. But heartless contain hearts so Sora in a way must have had a new body created by Kairi since the nobody(roxas is the body of hte person who dies) But since Kairi is a princess of the hearts or whatever that must have given her the power to do that.

As for Kairi....I can't remember exactly what happened to her. oh yeah Sora gave up his heart so Kairi could be whole again in kh1(reason why he became a heartless) But in that time she created a nobody(Namine) Although Namine is different because she was created differently from most nobodys. Also Roxas was created odly as well and there is the chance that Roxas has a heart. But that is only a possibility. As for Namine having a heart....it's possible but nothing has much leading toward it at the moment.

    Got it memorized?

In KH is where both Kairi and Sora had their Hearts temporarily out of circulation.

Sora - as explained above, lost his Heart when he took the Dark Keyblade and gave into Darkness willingly to free the Hearts of the Princesses, to include Kairi's which was within his own Heart. He was transformed into a Shadow Heartless and was changed back by Kairi not too long after he caught up to her. Roxas was formed when Sora became a Heartless for that small time. However, since he retained his memories, even though he stated they were starting to fade away, Roxas did not gain his memories as a Nobody.

Kairi - Lost her Heart early in the game but it was kept safe and held by Sora. When Sora used the Dark Keyblade, Darkness was used to free her Heart from Sora's (unlocking his Heart essentially) and her Heart was returned to her body. Since she had no Darkness, being a Princess of Heart, her Heart returned to her body but at the same time, Namine was formed.

In KH2, Sora does have Anti-Form, which to me seemed to be a path he 'could' head down to become a being consumed by Darkness if he abused power etc. All of the Forms sort of represented what Sora would gain and learn and could be as he grew; just that he was getting the power early. Valor for strength, Wisdom for knowledge and magic, Master for the combination of these and Final form was the complete growth. Anti-Form was the form technically you wouldn't -want- to get because it's a prelude that Sora could fall to Darkness. Once he hits Final Form though, he could use it and never turn to Anti-Form so it showed to me that he could rise above the Darkness in his Heart. Of course, this is speculation but that's what I theorize it meant.

Sora's Heart was returned to him in KH1 when Kairi held him and used her connection to him to restore it. However, it being gone for that time as a Shadow was long enough to create Roxas. Also, since he does have Darkness in his Heart, he turned into a Shadow. It obviously wasn't that much Darkness since he became the weakest of Heartless really. Kairi lost her Heart and it was restored to her at the end of KH when Sora used the Dark Keyblade, so Darkness was used to form Namine, even though moments later, Kairi awakened with her Heart. So neither Sora or Kairi were missing their Hearts for very long.

The others have already stated the translanted, lay-man's termed and abridged versions of canon information. Though it isn't stated in a cutscene...if you want confirmation and specifics refer the the Ansem reports of both games, specifically the first one concerning what are Heartless..

If you want my personal take on it, Sora and Kairi did heart juggling with each other, and Nobodies are very special in their existence-non-existence (as in it technically should be breaking the laws of conservation). I actually think that they regain their bodies by "remembering" who they were, hence why Sora was able to hop between a shadow and back to his normal self.
