Sticks and Stones may brake my bones, but your words will never hurt me?? Do you think this is very accurate. words do hurt, probably even worse than someone punching you or getting stabbed with a knife...what do you think..

Words may hurt you, but only if you choose to let them hurt you.

As for physical pain, it hurts if you choose to let it or not.

That is more of a consolation than an actual fact. It's meant to make the weak, downtrodden people feel better. Speaking as one of the weak through all of high school, it doesn't really work.

I had to cultivate an attitude of indifference to everything anyone said or did, and it took till senior year to do. At the same time, I became so weird that no one who talked to me understood a word I said, and that persisits to this day (second semester junior in college, FTW). That, in my mind, helps a lot more than platitudes. If no one can get inside your head enough to figure outhow to insult you, they are a lot less effective. The one time someone did actually beat me up, the school sued him, and no one tried again.

Not trying to belittle what they are doing, but that is pretty typical of middle and high schoolers, especially the jocks/generally athletic ones. They see an opening, and they take it. Without remorse. Just give them no openings, and they can't do anything to you. I'm not saying to close yourself off, just to seem not to care what they say. When they see that avenue is no longer open to them, they will stop or move on to something else, which you can then start the process all over. It also helps if you can gain selective hearing, so you can just listen to something else or your own thoughts whenever they start talking to you.

In addition, try to find some obvious superiority over them. Are you smarter than them? Probably, from your description. So just remind yourself that one day, you will be able to make 6 figures guaranteed, whereas they will hae to struggle and fight to make any kind of guaranteed money (pro sports is another issue - like 1% of high school athletes make it in the pros).

Really you should just ignore them. If they could have caught the ball as they said, they would have. At least you actually tried. So yes words can hurt but you should just attempt to not let them because if you feel put down the people who said it have acomplished their goal.

    Lol @ Underlined text

If you let it hurt you? How do you STOP physical pain once it gets to you? xD I mean, how does a kick in the ba- never mind. I'm just questioning how you stop physical pain once it hits you.

As for words, in Internet speaking, never take it seriously. As for real life, I actually do the same, take some things as a joke. Insults mean nothing if you can't back them up, if you can then I still just say "That's what makes it hilarious. Even about [Someone/Object/Action]"

    I don't even know why I do though. O_o

lol I remember when I was around 5 a boy at a day camp school called me a name (I totally forgot what it was) it wasn't the name that bothered me but it was the fact that he was following me and taunting me. (it really got on my nerves) I went to my mom and asked her what I should do and she said I should say this phrase. And I never heard from that boy again.

Anyway the "words will never hurt me" part reminds me of "the pen hurts more than the sword". Words really can hurt more than being physically beaten up. Many people have gotten depressed and even committed suicide over what they saw people put on their myspace about them.

I'm not saying that being beaten up physically wouldn't hurt. But if you ask a War veteran about what they went through after they were captured most of them have scars on their bodies but they always mention the emotional pain more than the physical pain.

Words shouldn't hurt. I've said it before: if they are lies then you will see through them and if they are true then you deserve to hear them.

Of coure an exception to this is when someone spreads lies about you to other people who can't see through them due to lack of information.
    In other words: gossip.

Towards the latter half of my primary school education we got a new headmaster. He changed that saying to read "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will rip my heart out." I think it was part of an anti-bullying campaign or something lol But there is some truth to it.

Emotional scars can last a lot longer than mental ones, and can't be helped with medicine or hospitals. They have to be dealt with by you and you often aren't strong enough to deal with it.

So yeah, words can cause much more lasting damage than physical violence but only if you let them.

Well actually... I remember this saying - but in some other phrase. You just kind of mixed it up.

"Sticks and Stones break your bones, but words shatter the heart ." Or somethin like that :\
I kind of have to agree with it though, sometimes the slightest little thing can really peirce through your heart. The lamest comebacks or the worst, personal insults.
And as mentioned, depression can lead to a lot of bad things. Much worse than a bunch of broken bones.
It's like an Emotional vrs. Physical thing, really - Emotional taking the win of course~

I myself have never cried from physical pain :/ It sounds hard to believe but even when I was little and I tripped and fell in the playground I'd tell myself there was no point in crying, it wasn't going to help. However verbal abuse nearly always makes me cry D: It just seems to go alot deeper than a cut or bruise would.

I've never really agreed with this saying.
    Words hurt way more.
I remember once my uncle came up to me when I was younger.
He had a black eye and some other injuries and I kept asking him why he wasn't crying, or why he wasn't sad.

He told me that he would rather be physically beaten to a pulp then to be hurt by words.
I agree with him. When you get hurt physically, the pain USUALLY goes away.
And maybe there's a scar left or something.
But when you're truly hurt emotionally, it stays with you.
It can stay with you for the rest of your life and influence your actions.

This saying is an absolute lie. I actually will shout at any parent that says this to a child. Emotional or Verbal bullying can actually leave mental scarring and can lower slef esteem. In some cases, vermal bullying has been the cause of suicide and I'm not talking about Cyber-Bullying, I'm talking about people physically coming up to you and saying things in front of your face. Often also it isn't one time, in fact the word bullying only applies to a sustained period but the more and more you hear these groups of words the more it brings you down and even after it's stopped any of the words siad to you could bring back the bullying. I got burned a few years back (making fudge, not a good idea) and the scars are only just beginning to fade. However, I have been bullied a lot in my life and even when I try not to think about it , it sometimes comes flooding back, and it isn't the punches or kicks, it's the words, the looks, the snide comments. It you are being affected by bullying then you need to tell someone as soon as possible.

In short I agree with the person above, Sticks and Stones may Break My Bones, But Words will Never Hurt me Rip My Heart Out.

i think that's a good saying, words DO hurt, sometimes you can shrug them off but it can still hurt quite a bit.

what's the difference between emotional scars and mental scars?

The phrase is not very descriptive, I think it should be this:

"Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will only hurt psychologically, whether or not they seem to be true."
