    Opinions?

I've never seen one episode of any of the shows, any of the movies, and have always thought it was a nerdier version of Star Wars (which I disliked)

It was just one of those geek things I made fun of.

But I gotta say, this new movie looks pretty damn niice.
Effects are great, and I could actually get interested in this.

    Even the story seems better.

If you haven't heard/read, the movie takes place before the original Star Trek.
It focuses on Kirk and Spock's friendship, beginning of their career, etc.
BTW as much as I avoided Star Trek, Spock always seemed cool to me in all the parodies, references, etc.

The movie's plot is about Nero, a Romulan from the future who is interfering with history. Spock from the future also comes back to help the Kirk and his younger self (and guess who plays him: Leonard Nimoy himself, the original Spock)
Contrary to rumors, William Shatner is NOT in this movie, no cameo or anything.

What really made this movie stand out from the rest to me is this:
J.J. Abrams is directing it. I love his work, especially Cloverfield and Lost.
Speaking of which, the guy (name escapes me) who designed the Cloverfield monster with Abbrams is also on board; he helps design the aliens, so you know there will be some great creatures.

Something that kind of strucks me as challenging for the crew is this: how do you make this movie futuristic when we live in the future of the original.
The communicators in the old franchise resemble cell phones of this age. We now have iPhones that do more than those "future communicators". So it's pretty difficult for this movie to resemble the old series.

    Anyways those are my thoughts.

    Yours?

The newest March trailer did it for me. It was just too epic to look past. I'm seeing it opening night.

I have never been able to see any Star Trek movie in theaters. I am going to see this one. It is my one ambition in life right now. If you are going to watch Star Trek at any point, I might recommend starting with this newest one and then going Star Trek: Motion Picture all the way chronologically to Nemesis. Trust me, they're VERY worth it. And, with all of them, they try to make it so that, even if you've never heard of the show, you will be able to understand the movies.

On topic, though, the only things that bug me are:

    A) the enemy is supposed to be a Romulan, yet it was said in one of the original series' episodes that no Romulan had ever been seen by anyone in the Federation.
    B) I'm kind of curious about the combat sequences in this movie. An interview I read said that the director is a huge Star Wars fan, which means lots of dogfighting, lots of action and movement. The ships in Star Trek, however, are WAY too big to dogfight with - they move too slowly. So it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Other than that, it looks like a kickass movie, with characters that fangirls can drool over for generations.

Lol was that Angelina Jolie and the guy who plays Syler from Heroes?

But anyway, I will probably go see this just to satisfy my inner nerd :v I watched all the series all the time xD And I've seen several of the movies (and played a lot of the games x: )

I heard that William Shatner auditioned for the role of Kirk xD

I'm gonna be seeing it with my dad when I'm home between semesters. I truly am interested in how this movie will differ from the others in the Original Series.

After the trailer there's no way I'd miss giving this ago, even though I've never seen any thing of Star Trek before. Sylar was my fave character in heroes, it'll be great to see him in a different main role.

I'll admit it right here and now: I'm a Star Wars nerd, not a Trekkie.

Now that i've made this distinction, I am looking forward to see if Abrams is going to be able to breath new life into a franchise that is 43 years old but do it well and not turn it into a technological display of amazement and shift itself away from plot or story structure.

Plus, Simon Pegg is in this as Scotty. That in itself makes me want to see this movie...and Quinto.

Except I laughed my ass off when I saw your picture. Your username does not compute.

I read in Entertainment Weekly that Abrams added a ton of fight scenes, because he always felt that Star Trek moved much too slowly.

I'm iffy on the Star Trek movie. I've watched a bit of the original, not much to speak of, but I know a bit about it. I'm not a fan of remakes, and tbh Cloverfield didn't live up to my expectations, but I'll probably go see Star Trek. I mean, it's Star Trek.

Also, am I the only one who's pissed that they're going to make two additional movies? Hollywood needs to stop milking things.

The only reason Hollywood continues to milk things is because if they develop a strong IP that is craved my a decent demographic, then why not? That's why James Bond has gone for so long, that's why we 'accepted'

If Star Trek tanks, like the last few have, I really doubt that Hollywood would want to fork over the money to keep pleasing 40+ year old trekkie die-hards, but i've been proven wrong before.

I agree (except I enjoy starwars)
I thought it looked dodgy and boring, but I saw the trailer for the new movie, and it actually looks good! I wouldn't mind seeing it, but I am thinking of just waiting till dvd?

Anyone who has seen it... do you suggest I see it at the movies or wait till dvd?

No one has seen it yet; it's coming out this Friday. At least in America. And I doubt anyone here went to the secret Texas showing.
Heeey now, I liked the prequels. D:

Well, being a Trekkie myself, I thought the movie was alright.

The CGI and effects were amazing. The plot was disappointing though.

I'm kinda mad that none of it was real. It was basically a fanfic plot. So the whole 'alternate reality' type of thing was not the best. Really, it could have been a lot better.

At least it wasn't as bad as Nemesis -_-

So overall I liked it, but I'm still wondering why Spock and Uhura were together.

...So, I'm going to see this again and take my mom out to Mother's Day to see it. I'm not going to lie, I was blown away by this movie even in the traditional Star Trek cannon seemed a bit off. Excellent cast, Pine was an excellent Kirk, Quinto's is now the new Spock forever, and McCoy...I can't wait to see this again.

They were ok. Not up to the quality of the original trilogy.

Texas showing? Was in a specific city? Because if it was...it'd be in mine...>>

I've watched quite a few Star Trek episodes and movies...and actually, I like this one just as much or even more so than the other episodes/movies. 8D Although it isn't even based off of my favorite generation of Star Trek. But still awesome. Sylar as Spock was....just freaking amazing. @-@
