Punch trees. Get wood. Make a crafting table. Use table to craft wood to make a makeshift house. Have your house constructed by the start of night. Stay in the house for your first night to guard against zombies.

Wait, which game are we talking about again?

I can put the table out but I dunno how to craft on it. Then I couldn't pick it up and then the zombies came, and I ran, and they surrounded me. So I quit. XD

Neither do I, for that matter.

YES MORE TERRARIANS MORE. WE ARE LEGION.

Ok, so. I'm sure you can tell, but this is one of those games where you need to give yourself projects. Most of the stuff you need in the beginning requires wood, so chop down lots of trees. Make sure to plant an acorn for every tree you fell! Otherwise you'll run out of trees eventually. As has been said, you wanna start with a workbench. It's one of the major workstations, so try to get one quick. Once you make one, equip it and place it; any flat surface will do. Then, whenever you're near enough to it, hit Esc and you'll probably see that you can craft more things than usual.

Obviously, you need protection from the zombies at night. Any enclosed space will protect you, and you can use any blocks you collect from the environment to build a house: dirt blocks, stone blocks, wood blocks, etc. Just equip them to start placing them. They have to be adjacent to something, though; you can't place floating blocks. You can also craft walls from most of the aforementioned materials, which looks better and counts towards actual housing. You can make a door, tables, chairs, etc. out of wood (at a workbench, of course). Kill some of those slimes you see running around to get gel. That stuff is flammable, so naturally it is the fire stand-in; for example with gel and wood, you can make torches. Once you have a functioning, decently-sized house with some furnishings, the Guide should move in. You can get other NPCs to move in after you start fulfilling their requirements and providing more housing space. Those requirements will take a while, though, and setting up housing is a pain in the ass thanks to the updates, so don't worry about that at the start. Just make sure your house keeps you safe.

When you've just about exhausted your potential for woodcrafting, set out in search of ore. Copper and iron ore are going to be your mainstays at first, with iron being the most valuable for crafting. You will likely find many natural tunnels and caves; take some torches into those and explore for ore. Once you have some, get some stone and torches together and make a furnace; after you place that, you can use it to smelt ore into bars. First thing you want to make with iron bars is an anvil, another big workstation. You use it to make armor, weapons, and tools. Once you have a decent sword, you should be able to explore at night without being immediately torn to shreds. Just watch out for the floating eyes.

From there it branches out a bit. You can explore the different biomes, mine underground, upgrade your gear, etc. Friendly warning: If you see the grass turn purple ahead, TURN AROUND AND LEAVE. That's the Corruption, and you won't be ready to tackle that for a while yet. (Watch out for enemies following you out of it, too; they're persistent.) The Jungle is pretty dangerous when you're first starting out, but usually Jungle and Corruption are on the same side of a given world. The other side contains Desert, which is somewhat less dangerous. And sand makes glass, which is useful for all kinds of stuff. Just watch out when you're mining it, it's the only block that collapses when you mine blocks out from underneath it and it will damage you if you get stuck in it.

Hope that helps, have fun c:

Just read how to play Minecraft or watch Minecraft vids on YouTube. That should explain what you need to do.

Cheers for this! I've begun creating a wee Hobbit house in the ground and I'm starting to get into it. Just wish they told you how to play the game at the start instead of tossing you in head first.

Well, it's a true-blue sandbox game; exploration and experimentation are supposed to be part of the fun. That said, it's a rare breed that enjoys going into a game with zero knowledge or preparation.

I'm actually enjoying it more now that you told me how to start out. Today I spent many in-game days lost underground and having to dig my way out upwards only to flood the tunnel. xD

Well I'm not qualified to compare the two but basically yes it's like this, if sex involved rearranging parts of your partner to make a giant replica of George Washington's head. Also if giant floating eyes attacked you when you did it at night.

Ah, good fun. A tip for mining: When you encounter a pool of water, keep digging through it, but every now and then mine out a small pocket reaching upwards. The water won't flood into it, and you can jump up to get your breath back.
