The movie was a hell of a lot better than Pacific Rim.

Hell, the first thirty minutes is a hell of a lot better than the entire run time of Pacific Rim.

I've been hearing the movie was pretty underwhelming overall

Let's put it this way: If you're going in for just mindless monsters punching, you may be disappointed.

If you're going in to see a monster movie, you may be surprised.

Sounds exactly like what I don't want from a giant monster movie. Have you ever seen the 1991 movie Godzilla vs King Ghidorah? There's nothing of merit to any film critic in that movie- the plot is terrible, the characters are dumb, and even it's own rules make no sense. Yet, it's a master of practical effects and is one of my favorite movies ever because it's just two monsters beating the crap out of each other

If you're seeing a Godzilla movie for anything other than monsters duking it out, you're not a fan of Godzilla and just recognize the name. The Godzilla movies are basically sci-fi prize fights

I actually haven't seen any of the previous Godzilla movies, but I do understand the appeal of it all.

I wrote this somewhere else, but I feel that if this was just some unknown monster creating its own mythology, there would be a lot more favorable reactions. This is Godzilla though, a known property, and has the stigma of having to give something to make the audience happy. It could also be that they're trying to adapt a cornerstone of Asian cinema to the classic Hollywood formula.

And yeah, I didn't go to see it for Godzilla. I came to see Bryan Cranston (as well as to write a review). Odd, I know, but I didn't know much of the franchise anyway and decided to watch it. Not expecting much from it, and not knowing what to expect, I really liked it.

It has plots and characters, which surprises me, but makes me want to see it.
If it's anything like Cloverfield, i'll be happy.

Also, I could be wrong here since I haven't seen any other Godzilla movie apart from the 90s one, but didn't the first Godzilla movie basically have a plot and wasn't just a dumb monster mash up movie?

From your thoughts on Pacific Rim and the new Godzilla, it's honestly pretty clear that you don't get monster movies. They're not the type of movies where the cast is who you show up for- you show up to root for the monster and to see him wreck stuff and clever the destruction will get. It's not called "Steve," it's called Godzilla.

Reviewers these days man. They don't know jack about the creation of cinema and how little writing does for the experience. Godzilla since creation and up until the 90s is a master of creating practical effects.

Also, had to snip the quote so I could see. KHV mobile isn't kind :X

If I wanted to see two monsters fight each other for no reason, i'd wait till after the pubs close and follow the biggest dude there.

I get monster movies, I do. I understand the appeal of them. They're just not something that interests me. I was just stating why I came to see it was a personal reason, and plus, the trailers looked really cool. I don't see a monster film the same way I would something that is trying to get an Oscar, because that's not fair. Everything is looked at in its own context.

Hey, not all critics are like that. I do my own research for the film. I noticed that the monsters in the movie seemed more than just CG creatures; they had souls. There are certain things they do in the movie that give them a bit of humanity. Turns out that there was motion capture that was supervised by Andy Serkis, one of the best in the business (although, I don't think he did capture work).

Btw, I liked the '98 Godzilla movie for the design of Zilla and its massive nest. It was basically Jurassic Park if the TRex and Velociraptors were in a city.
Basically, the second movie if it only took place in the city.
