Well, I'm not sure if you guys have seen this trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izzA3q5nbls It was a movie last year that I was able to voice during it's commercial that aired in the New York state in some selected cities. I was impressed that I was able to voice in a commercial and was hoping that this year I may be able to act in the new upcoming movie. Now here comes a choice that I'm a little worried about. At first, the producer told me that he wanted me to act and that he was saving me a role as this young guy who has been bullied and is suffering from being too skinny. I didn't think the role would be so bad for me to act, but then the role was shifted this week to have the character gay. It was influenced based on the deaths that recently happened last week in our country. These movies every year are focused on stopping any violence and we all know that anybody who is gay ends up in depression. Although I'm not gay, I don't know if I should give up the role. I don't have to do anything that will make me feel unconformable, but in the movie I have to act depressed from what society would be doing to this character. Overall, it's acting and that's all it is. I can easily act depressed, but I'm just worried that society will take it serious that I'm really like this character and my life is stressful enough as it is. I couldn't even imagine what it's like to be in that position, so I honestly feel bad for so many people that are. They just shouldn't be treated like this and that's why I want to take on this role. We are hoping that we can help some people, but I just don't want to end up having a status that's not even true. What should I do?
There are a lot of actors who take on les/gay roles, even if they arn't in real life. I really don't think that it would influence your acting career, but if it's uncomfortable for you to play such a part, then no one can make you do anything you don't want to. But I really would hate to see you give up such an opportunity, ya know? I think you should at least give it a try. If you don't like it, you can always back out later. What movie is it, anyway?
First of all, Congrats :D second of all, everything everyone does in this business is going to have some good and bad reveiws. Everyone's opinions are different. Don't give up this role if you're worried about offending anyone. It is a touchy subject, but lots of other people are going to like the movie because it shows truth to some peoples lives. I think you should definitely go for it. :]
I say go for it, Mike. You don't want to let it pass by and look back thinking "wow, maybe I should have done that." Acting is something you're passionate about, and part of acting is being able to put yourself into a role that is nothing like who you are and being able to pull it off convincingly. ;o Don't worry about people thinking you are gay -- I doubt that it'll happen. If they do, prove them wrong. :B Kidding. Maybe.
Yeah, you really need to do this. It's a great opportunity that may never come around again if you don't take it. It'll definitely get you a great jump start on your career which can do nothing but good.
I say you should, you'll be doing good showing everyone how people in that position would feel even if you're not in it yourself. This is a good opportunity and I wouldn't pass it up because some people may think you're gay. You can put the world in their shoes and show them to show gays some respect.
Thanks guys. It's about time the world understands how others feel. The only thing that's important to me is helping out people and that's what my goal is in this particular movie. I'm taking it very seriously. It shouldn't be hard to act this role, because the kid will be depressed and I'm always depressed about things, so that should be easy. I shouldn't worry about what others think, so I won't let this role go down. By the way, there is no title for the movie yet, but it's a Peers Influence Peers movie. This is them. http://peerspartnership.org/
Like the previous I say go for it. If youre serious about acting then you have to show the diversity of roles you're willing to take on, and not restrict yourself. If you're worried about becoming depressed from the acting you really shouldn't be. Remember, you are not your character. No matter how much you put yourself into that part always think that you're your own person. Don't let the woes of fiction become part of. Besides, the reason you're acting in this particular role is to start to increase the awareness of abuse in the world and in your community. Remember you're doing it for something greater than yourself and let that push you though the problems you may encounter. All I can really say is that whatever choice you make, let it be the best for you. Good luck and congrats.
I just wanted to thank everyone again. I went for auditions and obtained the role, so I'm going for it. Also, the character has been changed to just a normal bullied situation, so not much of a challenge anymore. I would love to keep you guys informed, for those that are interested. =) Filming starts the 1st week of December.
