This may seem like a strange thing to talk about, but with a proper HD Kingdom Hearts drawing inexorably closer, I was wondering. Should keybades be shiny? In all current icarnatiosn they have a faded, almost pastel like colouring. Should they take on a more metallic sheen in future games?
(For clarification, the poll is basically just a sliding scale from futuristic Apple sleekness, and Keyblade Graveyard level rust)

I'd say somewhere around Keyblade graveyard rust.

    No, please no.

Whenever I see art of a Keyblade that has been given a metallic look to it, it just looks silly.
It's like they are trying to make it look realistic, but KH is not a realistic thing, stylistically it's a cartoon.

I guess bright, because they are metal. But even though I don't know too much about sheen and stuff, if they were chrome it might make how they appear when summoned less special.

It depends. Stylistically, I agree with below--it just doesn't fit to have hyper-realistic graphics in an otherwise cartoony game. However, in certain cases, it can have a decent effect, like the Keyblade Graveyard; these are old, unused Keyblades, so they should show some signs of aging. But I think the standard Kingdom Key would look woefully out of place if the blade portion was a shiny, reflective metallic.

Then again, if later iterations of the games (as in, not HD Remixes) get PS2 FMV quality to them, I could see more metallic being worked in, albeit sparingly. If you take a look at the KHII opening cutscence, the Kingdom Key does have some gloss to it, but nothing extreme.

Meanwhile, things like Sora's necklace display a greater reflectivity.

This could just be a matter of environment (in the first screen, all the metal would be reflecting is the white room, whereas Sora is surrounded by far more in the second), but I would rather they vary it--balance the realism with the cartoon.

Maybe a tiny bit of shine but not too much to where it doesn't fit in anymore.

Is this the same kind of thing Gears of War does with their multiplayer weapons, where you chrome and whatever?

Anyway, might pick rusty to show old keyblades like in the Keyblade Graveyard.

How shiny should it be? It should be shiner than a shiny Pokemon. Make that thing change colours and glitter!
