Really? Scarred for life? I think the parents might be overdoing it.

Additionally, I saw the part in question that made them freak out, and it's not at all scary.

This actually happened to me, LOL. I was supposed to watch Scott Pilgrim VS the World, but instead I got a REALLY scary movie. And I don't like scary movies. T_T I did get a refund, though.

But I didn't get scarred for life. I think that's an exaggeration.

Cause of course it takes more than 15 full seconds of not an animated movie before people can figure out OH HEY THIS ISN'T MADAGASCAR.

Seriously. I watched the movie. You can tell what it is the moment the text pops up on the screen about whatever incident from the 2nd movie.

I could swear i've been past that place a few times when visiting my Uncle...

Still this is quite funny to hear. I remember going to see a film, fairly empty screening, but I noticed a mother and child coming in, he must have been 8. Now this was a foreign language film, with political intrigue, war and violence. I wondered why they were in there. After the opening scene of text came up, a bloody battle began, less then a minute later the mother was dragging her kid out of the door. I couldn't help but laugh.

Still I doubt it's scarring, at least for the majority of people who by chance see it. They will be introduced to violent media in the future, this isn't scarring this is just the likely first chance they will be introduced to such fake concepts.
I also highly doubt Paranormal Activity openings are that scarring. I've only seen PA2 but nothing happened for over an hour let alone the first few minutes!

Working at a theater, I can actually tell you this is quite common, especially now that everyone is using digital projectors. In the past, with the film projectors, it was pretty impossible to load the wrong movie, unless you had the film on nearby platters--now with the digital projectors, you just set up a schedule and it's all automated. You make last minute decisions to switch theaters, or just hit the wrong button, and you can have a disaster on your hands. Just this past weekend we accidentally played the first ten minutes of Hotel Transylvania in the theater that was supposed to be showing Paranormal Activity 4.

Well, all I can say is this is one of the consequences of using digital projectors. It's convenient, but also more accessible to mistakes. I suppose parents should be more aware of these things instead of solely relying on a ratings mindset.
