It's not confirmed, but if Sony is in the process of developing a system that bounds a game disc to a console account then they should say goodbye to those fans who have supported them.

It's only speculation and rumour at the mo, but it'd be a horrible move on Sony's part. Second hand games are big sellers for game stores and if Sony bring this out then they've not only sealed their own failure, but it'd do a lot of damage to stores.

I sure hope this is just a rumor and nothing else.

No way this is happening, Sony's not suicidal.
Rental stores would lose too much profit and everyone would complain like there's no tomorrow, with a good reason. Their credibility would sink like a rock.

Regardless of truth behind this, it is apparently affecting Gamestop stock. Of course, if Sony does do something effective to block used games, they're going to completely **** up the collector market.

I don't think Sony wants to do this to themselves, really though that would hurt the industry so much if that happened. Maybe they are just doing it because of Piracy? At any rate it won't stop the pirates for long.

I heard some people discussing this before. They made some interesting arguments. Disc garbage will increase ten fold due to people wanting to get rid of a video game they no longer can sell since it is bound to their system. Not to mention factory sealed video games that are no longer in Gamestop will skyrocket in price on the internet. Rare hidden gems of the system will never see the light of day due to someone having to look for a brand spanking new copy of an already obscure game.

How many of you actually pay 60-70$ for a video game? Overall its a bad idea.

Well now that would be a waste of money and time. It would just stink if I couldn't take a game to my friends house.

True, that would mean that when the console died, it would be extremely hard to find copies of the game anymore. It would also mean that the price of the game would still be fairly high. At least you would never lose the game, :p

I heard a good point which may happen. The fact they own the patent doesn't mean they will do anything about it. Many companies own patents that they have done nothing with. Many simply get them so that competitors can't make use of it.

You may find Sony got the patent so that Nintendo and Microsoft can't develop and sell something with that capability.

Also the fact they've only just got the patent means they are in the early stages of development, so this technology is a few years off. The PS4 will be out before that.

I seriously hope that this stays a rumor. I have too many used games to see something like this ruined them.

Ya basically it won't happen. It's like McDonald's getting rid of trash cans and making people take their trash out. Wouldn't be beneficial for anyone. (Actually I dunno if that analogy made any sense ah well.)

I actually wouldn't mind something like this happening. They need to sort something out about online passes. I was about to return a game that I had just used an online pass on but realized the person buying it after me wouldn't be able to use it. So I forced myself to keep it.

Either way, doesn't affect me, I never get preowned games.

This would be yet another reason why i'm losing faith in sony. Sony better hope that this rumor stays a rumor, or they're gonna go bankrupt pretty quick. I honestly don't know just who is coming up with all of there ideas, but there not very good at it. There's a line between boosting sales, and killing your company. You're crossing that line a bit more everyday Sony.
