    I'm not sure if this is possible, but could it be made so that when username changes occur, all quoted material gets changed, too?

    Let's say someone had responded with "Yes, you are" to the following quote on, say, November 20th this year.

    If their username were to be changed to, say, Awesome Person, then with my suggestion, the quoted material would automatically change to:

    Thanks in advance for any feedback!

    I think this is a wonderful idea. If it's possible, I can't think of any good reason why it should not be implemented.

    Instead of having the username information within the post itself, have a reference to the current username. Sounds simple enough on paper.

    EDIT:

    I'm member number 3440 so the quote tags could look like:

    Yes, this would be great! A lot of Member have changed the names and on the quote there is the previous info.

    If this was at all possible,it would be very handy I must say.

    I think it's a good idea, and the way to do it, if I'm not mistaken is to alter the code so that instead of quoting name and ID, all you have to do is to quote the ID.

    When I quote Daxa, it is like this;

    QUOTE=Daxa;3581226

    I'm not sure if it is at all possible, but the way to alter the code would be just to do this;

    QUOTE=3581226

    That way you have the user ID, but not their name, so instead of the name being a constant, it would be a variable.

    Actually the number when you quote someone is the post ID. It is used to derive the link in the quote. For example quoting you just now used the number "3581260" so it knows to link back with [post]3581260[/post].

    Your post was vague enough I'm not sure if you knew that or not. But I wanted to at make sure others aren't confused either way.

    I do think that is the right track though. There should be a way to code it to identify the post owner of the ID'ed post, or at the very least find the current username of a given user ID. However I wasn't able to quickly locate a mod to do that. I'll dig around a bit more but there might not currently be a way to do it.

    Figured I'd bump this old thread to see if this were possible on XenForo since it does the same thing of keeping whatever the username was when it was quoted.

    For example, if I quoted myself now, it would be:
    Even if I changed back to Amaury or whatever, it would still say Mako if I came back and looked at this.

    I would really like this, especially if I'm browsing old threads.

    It's a similar issue as here: http://kh-vids.net/threads/likes-issue.138417/

    However, it probably won't be fixed, nor is it possible for it to be fixed. When you quote a post, the code looks like this:
    Code:
    [quote="Rinzler, post: 4105661, member: 53692"]
    It references both the member's ID number (53692), which never changes, and the current username (Rinzler). That username is hard coded into the post, meaning the only way to go update old quotes would be to do a massive Find + Replace on the site, which would come with its own share of issues (and with the sheer volume of username changes, it's frankly not feasible).

    As far as I'm aware quote behavior cannot be changed to include only the user ID, and then process the current username from that. If it was, though (and that's beyond my expertise to change), that would add additional queries per page.

    I believe the "@" feature in the new version of XenForo may be a possible solution to the matter. I'll tinker with things on my site later to see if there is a way to change the quote feature to do what it is you're asking. If I can achieve this with a simple code change (highly unlikely) I'll post it on XenForo and edit this post with a link to it at that time (that is if you guys want to use it).

    Seeing as the site will be updating soon anyway, might see about requesting this on XenForo and seeing if they can work it into an update.
