Get to about LV72, have Lady Luck, 7-8 elixirs, Donald and Peter Pan in party, and have them stoked with mega-ethers. Magic is key in this battle. You should short-cut Fira-ga Blizzara-ga and Thundera-ga and have your magic command pre-set on Stopra. I play KHFM Proud and that works for me.
Yeah, he is an Emblem, I believe. Very annoying to defeat too. ^^ Get Peter Pan and Goofy. Stock some Ethers/Mega-Ethers and if needed some Elixirs. When he uses that spell cast a Stop magic in Big Bang. I recommend to set Shortcut with Triangle Blizzard spell Square Fire spell and X with Thunder. Not exaclty in this order but at least use those magics in the shortcut. When needed don't hesitate to heal yourself, but try your best to don't waste any MP or Item Slot. So be careful. In Kingdom Hearts (isn't Final Mix), I remember beating him around level 72 in Expert Mode, with Donald and Peter Pan. I don't remember many things but I remember a difficult in defeating him. But I recommend you get Peter Pan and Goofy because Donald doesn't has a great HP. Goofy has a lot of Slot Items, and Peter Pan too. Set then to don't use any abilities (un-equip all of them BESIDES MP Gift from Goofy) besides MP Gift from Goofy. Peter Pan and Goody are just the "bait", because I don't believe they can be of much help in this battle... Well, I hope this somewhat helps you, good luck with Phantom! =]
Personally I say no Donald here. He doesn't have great AI for this type of fight and will likely waste all his MP and by extension ethers. Goofy on the other hand has MP Gift which means you can cast more.
I have to disagree. I play KHFM on the hardest difficulty, and all I use are Donald, and Peter Pan. While MP Gift is nice, Goofy gives it to the one who spams their MP the most (the other AI) It is very rare he gives it to me. Donald is great to hit the phantom where it hurts if you are out of range. Same for Petter and his hummingbird ability. Plus, just stock yourself with elixir/mega-elixir and the AI with mega-ethers, and MP gift is pretty much there but better.
Just set Goofy and Peter Pan to not use any ability that would cost MP (other than MP Gift) then the only logical target is you. You could do the same with Donald using the Customize menu instead of abilities, but Donald without magic doesn't sound like a smart move unless you believe that Donald is truly 100% useless.
I'm not discrediting your battle tactic, for each person fights differently. My opinion, if you do that to Goofy, then the only issue is MP Gift is all he's good for. Disable his abilities, he is rendered useless in battle. And if he is KO'd, I will not waste my magic or items to revive him, and I need my other AI on the Phantom to weaken him when I am out of range.
I guess if yours worked then it worked, but when I tried using Donald he used up all my mega ethers in about a minute and only hit Phantom about ten times. So I was left to hit the clock tower itself to regain MP until my inevitable demise while still doing 95% of the leg work. Outside of this battle I agree that it isn't a great setup, but in this battle it was the only way I found my allies to actually be helpful and not a hindrance.
Hmm, interesting. My Donald is never an issue with me. I've done that fight 5 consecutive times, and he's always helped, and I've saved some mega-ethers. What LVL are your characters at?
I haven't done that fight in a long time. Shame too since it is one of my favorite battles. I think I was in the 60-70 range You did mention you played FM. I'm recalling that off the North America version so maybe they tweaked stuff so Donald would be smarter in that fight, I'm not sure. When I played FM I went straight to the Goofy setup since that is what had worked for me before.
Had the same issue. That's why I have now have back-up files of all bosses I enjoy. Yeah, that's true, I wasn't even thinking of that. They also made Sephiroth smarter in that game as well. My Sora was LVL 72, so I think my Donald was a 69 or 71. Not sure if that really makes a difference though.
~Moved to Kingdom hearts help as the topic was a bit curtailed and deserved it's own thread. Any questions feel free to PM me. I've never fought or beaten the Phantom as of yet so I can't help you. Although the party members could be more useful depending on whether you chose the staff, shield or sword and your own personal technique so I'd try both. And there is always the age old tip of if you are having trouble then just go up a few levels.
Before I beat him my biggest problem was actually catching him. xD Fighting him was no problem (Lv.70) I just hated chasing him around the damn tower. T_T
