I think it'd probably be best to wait on building a Death Star until we can actually work with light, like in the movies. Not too mention, we'd have to build it in space, and the amount of money just to get the supplies, and not even getting it into space.....did they not even think about this before they made the petition?

Because building a giant gun in space wont alarm other countries.

Why build one when we can't even get ourselves out past our own moon?

I think you' re missing the point, it looks to me like a way to mock the US permanent war economy. The joke is probably lost on many, it may not even be intentional, but either way I think it' s brilliant. :D

You seem to misunderstanding a lot with this petition. Nobody with any sense is signing it out of practicality. It's being signed because it's awesome. ...Or it's a clever way to get NASA some extra funding which is good for everyone. Also, we can "work with light". Light just doesn't behave as portrayed in the movies.

If this gets enough signatures, a Death Star won't be built, but maybe NASA would get some more attention.

Anyways, I think everyone here should sign it. Nothing bad could possible come from this. No, again, a Death Star won't be built. No nuclear reactor on Earth could supply the power for it. You'd need small star to power it and that just isn't possible right now.

If it's a lost joke, it was lost on me as well......but even for a joke why would they do it on that website?

This comes as a surprise? I take a lot of things literally, and when I saw this, the first thing I basically thought was "What the heck...?"

As both a critic of US politics/economy and a Star Wars fan, this is one of the greatest things I've ever seen.

    That's no deficit, it's a space station.

Despite its impossibility at the the moment, working toward a goal of making a larger and more self sufficient space station would be an amazing thing for NASA to get more funding for. Or a moon base, who doesn't want a moon base.

This should happen . . . possible or not, this should happen. Can you imagine? We could fight off all the alien invaders who come to steal our twinkies chocolate. On a serious note, I hope this wasn't made with people legitimately seeing this plan come into fruition . . . I hope NASA regains the respect they deserve and their funding.

On a final (less serious) note . . . we got less than ten days to build a giant space arc and fly off to explore and populate the universe . . . who's with me!!

I'm not really knowledgeable with these kinds of things, but this honestly seems like a pretty bad idea. For one, I don't believe that there are enough people who are skilled enough in those fields provided in the source quote to even fill up all the spaces for jobs. Second, the Death Star is roughly the size of a moon, where are we going to build it? Surely not out in space, the amount of money that would take, not to mention gasoline and other resources . . . It'd take years, maybe even decades to finish. Even if we could build it on Earth, how the heck are we supposed to launch it? And the Moon/a moon is larger than the United states - what are we gonna do, build part of it here, launch it, and then finish it there?

    I'unno. I don't like it.

Precisely, it' s useless, that' s the joke : the Death Star is a metaphor for the war on terror. It' s a clunky, over-powered, over-priced, so flawed it always backfires on your sorry ass weapon, it destroys whole planets and their resources along with it. Not to mention you can' t destroy so- called "terror", it' s a totalitarian utopia.

    The article says :

Reminds you of anything ? Seeing that news published on Faux News is the cherry on the cake, successful troll is successful. xD

Hey, I made this thread just to please you. ^-^

But I agree with Machina. This would never happen. It would be great for NASA to get more attention again however.

Not needed, near impossible, waste of crucial limited resources... It's the American military spending's wet dream...

Seriously, American politics has the biggest paranoia and misinformation about threats to their country. There is a bigger risk and likelihood of cyber, chemical, virus attacks, etc then an actual military effort from a foreign country.

God, Allah, Buddha, anyone willing to listen, help us all!

    GO USA...?!

Well, I think it's awesome for people to be petitioning this even as a joke, but I fear that the Government will either totally ignore this or be overly sensitive about it.

But mad props and kudos to the guy who got these 13,000 persons to sign this. Preeeetty impressive.

The petition has now gathered 24278 signatures, only 722 to go ! That seems like a reasonable number to reach before tomorrow, however several names (including some dude named D.Vador) apparently signed it several times. The suspense is killing me ...

This just made me laugh uncontrollably. I don't think the US government will take this seriously, though. Waste of money when we don't have any.

Yeah. Well over that even. 28000 votes. It will go to the white house but will surely be turned down... Unless Obama is that huge of a Star Wars fan.

I love how they ACTUALLY know exactly what an X-Wing can do to it, lol.

Still would have been cool though :c
