I'm curious amongst the Pokemon fans out there, what do you prefer more? The old games or the new ones? Why?

I actually like the old games more. It's easier to capture all of the Pokemon for that game before they made games where you have to do a data transfer to capture all of the Pokemon. I really draw the line at the second generation. That and it seems that training all of the new Pokemon is much more harder and grueling.

I have a very complicated opinion on preference. Overall I don't prefer any of them but enjoy all the games equally for what they bring. Each has it's ups and downs for me. In the first few games it's much easier to catch all of the Pokemon and brings a lot of nostalgia. For 3rd get it introduced full color and a remake of the first generation. Fourth and 5th have a lot of new features compared to the past games and many new Pokemon to choose from.

One thing people use a lot for not liking newer gens that seems unfair to me is that the Pokemon aren't creative. But really, how is this that creative?

It's pretty much a Pokeball with eyes. Each generation has some lesser creative Pokemon yes, but all of them have some pretty unique Pokemon so I don't think that's a good way to judge the newer games by saying they're less creative.

I don't have any preference. I grew up with the old games and moved on to the new. I disliked Gen IV, and Gen II is my favorite. Gen V has full moving sprites, but it's to that point where there's a bit too many Pokémon.

Overall, I like Pokémon for being Pokémon, not for designs or whatever.

I don't really have much of a preference for newer vs older games. All of them brought some sort of innovative quality from the 1st Gen (which we can consider as a base of sorts):

    2nd Gen brought limited color
3rd Gen brought full color + double battles (plus the Battle Frontier system)
4th Gen brought online gameplay and a rework of move types
5th Gen brought...I'm not entirely sure since I haven't played any of them yet, but the graphical detail was raised more from the 4th Gen

In essence, I think the games have just evolved (ohoho) with each new generation. While sometimes I do yearn for some older mechanics at times, I also really like a lot of the additions Pokemon as a series has developed over the years. I would say it can, at times, be trial and error of course, but the constant reworkings and tweaking with each new generation make Pokemon have as fresh a feel as the first games did, which is something that is pretty challenging.

(also while i may not have a preference for newer games vs older, i have a special place in my heart for G/S/C/SS/HG because DUAL REGIONS)

It's kinda hard to tell which game is my favorite. I started playing Gen 2, but that wasn't my favorite. Each game brought something new to the table of pokemon whether it's simple as a new HM to a totally new system like the double battle. For me, the one I found most memorable was Gen 3. I really loved the double battles (if I recalled, it was revolutionary they made this), the characters, heck I even liked the enemy teams in that game despite their stupid plans and stuff. It was all a good package in one game.

Personally I enjoy the updates that the series has received as it has gone on. HG and HS are phenomenal to me, but I didn't like B&W that much and haven't touched the sequels. I just didn't like the region, the pokemon, or the graphics for battles that much (Though they're fully animated, they're a bit more pixelated). I'm honestly a bit skeptical of X & Y.

For people who are not blindly in love with the first two generations and oblivious to their myriad issues, the answer is obvious: The series has only improved with age. Because Pokémon feels no need to change - only to tighten a formula that was successful to begin with, until it excels in every single aspect. New games introduce exotic locales, create unique new Pokémon, add a wider spread of attack types and combinations, genuinely and earnestly correct problems from previous generations... and though Pokémon is definitely still a kids' game, the latest entries have come the closest to an intriguing plot in series history. It is one of the only series from my childhood that I can say, without a doubt, is exactly the same but better, and that should be a point of pride for the developers considering how many gaming giants they've seen rise and fall over the years.

If you ask me which generation I prefer, I will say gen III for aesthetics, II for characters, and IV for mechanics and difficulty; but if you ask me which game I think is the best overall, I'll always say the newest one. That has yet to change and I doubt it will for a long time coming.

I'm kind of a in-between person, I like the newer games because they've got more stuff to them, and more of a story than the older games, since it was only the third generation that started to have a serious story in them, and the older games are kind of nostalgic because I grew up with the first generation, and it's got its nice simplicity, above anything else. It just had you fighting a rival, collect badges, beat up an organization that you cross paths with (which, now that I think about it, didn't happen too much), and be the champion. The newer games added more functions, and seemed to give characters more detail and personality, which was also cool.

There are pros and cons to all generations, so it's hard for me to say which I like better.

I honestly prefer gen III and up. The lack of color in the first two gen's kind of gave me head aches and such. I cant even watch Black and White movies because of that. Gameplay-wise though, Gen IV had the best in my opinion.

Second gen was my favorite of the series. I played the heck out of pokemon red and when I finally got my hands on silver it blew me away. Especially the part where you could visit the kanto region in that game and challenge those gym leaders. The best part was the final battle with red, still gives me goosebumps remembering the first time I saw it. I also recently started playing pokemon again and have almost completed platinum. Not a bad game, but it really did not leave an impact on me. I'll probably work on pokemon black later.

My memory must be failing me, I clearly remember the second gen having color. =/

There was, but the environment color was really basic. xD Most of the more detailed coloring was in the in-battle/status Pokemon designs. I can see how it'd be jarring to go back from everything being detailed in the IV and V gens.

Not a goof actually. He's told me he just dislikes Gen II anyway.

I must not have noticed because I'm too used to it. XD
Although to tell you the truth I also recently played soul silver and if I had to replay the silver version of pokemon it would have to be that version.
It just kicked me in the gut with nostalgia!

I prefer the older gens. Not necessarily the very first, but earlier gens. There's just way to many Pokemon, and you have to go through too much trouble to get them all. I'd rather just be able to play a game by myself and not have to work with others. I'm sort of lone wolf when it comes to playing games. If I can't beat it alone, I don't want to play it. Exceptions to some online multiplayers.

But yea, earlier gens are the ones I like. Ruby and Sapphire are two of my favs ^^

I'm pretty sure most people think Gen II is best for obvious reasons (16 badges + all legendaries obtainable + extra challenges at the end)

New games. As much as I like the old battles (Red, especially) and locations, the new games continue to introduce new Gym Leaders and Elite Four to conquer, new features (finally getting to make our own somewhat unique trainers), new combinations of types (Ghost/Fire hnnnnnnnng), new ways to form teams, new amazing designs (stop thinking all of the originals are great or I'll just point at Grimer and Mr. Mime), and better story-lines with villains who have actual motivations beyond "lol world domination"

I just hate when we need to get a certain Pokemon through events and trades and whatnot, though I do enjoy when there is a unique in-game way you need to do to catch some of them (as long as it isn't overdone like with Feebas just to get Milotic)

The thing about new games is that i gave up catching all of the pokemon.. until second generation I still tried.
Even though I still have much fun with the games (until the league, after I slowly give up).
My favorite game was Crystal, but the Black & White are great! I don't like all the new pokemons, but the story and gameplay are always improving.
