I wanna know, what do you people prefer to do if you have the choice, name a character after yourself/a friend, or keep the defaults?

You can already decide in the Zelda games.

If they have defaults, I'll keep them, but I also like games like Disgaea where you can name your own.

If the option does arise I keep it the same, like in FFIX on the Playstation

I like being the hero, or villain, so I name the character after myself.

I always stick to the defaults. I don't know why but it never feels right to change their names.

Plus :/ on the first time I played FFX,
I named all my aeons after my sisters and some of my friends, and then at the end I had to freakin kill them B|
    so yeah, I always keep default names. My little sister named her Tidus after her boyfriend and then you can imagine the laughter when she got to the spring scene with Yuna >_>;

The defaults always fit the roles better. It feels fake when they are renamed.

I like deciding my own "pre"name.. i don't use my real name, but a different one that i go by in the "anime club" at school.

I used to rename 'em but it never really fit the characters. Now i just keep the original name. Like in Zelda; it must always be Link, ALWAYS! Otherwise it's not the same for me.

    that's pretty funny

i also stick to the original names, especially in games where there is spoken dialouge. it's just awkward if you name them something else and they still say the default name.

I use the default names, definitely, I don't want a video-game having connections to real-life...

My point exactly, as soon as you start messing with the names then it takes something away from the game IMO

    It wasn't funny at the time >.< I was like O_O **** D:

A lot of games that give you the option to use different names don't have any dialogue concerning the names though do they? Like they just directly address the characters etc instead of saying a name.

Interesting point, it is ironic that with all the fanfics we write and all the fangasming that when we have the options to relate real life to video games, it can make some people really uncomfortable.

One thing I forgot to mention is when the character in the game is a well known character with a name and you have the option of renaming them, I keep the origional name. I only rename a character when it's some lesser known RPG character. Like in KotOR or some Pokemon games.

It depends on the game. Most of the time I do change the names of the characters as a way of immersing myself into the game on another level, the only games where I have kept the main character (s) the same is Castlevania.

Anyone who doesn't name the main character of every game Christopher Walken is a ***.

It honestly depends. For Harvest moon: Rune Factory, I named my character after me, not Raguna.

While in LoZ, it is Link. Link is the name of the character.

In pokemon, I always name the character after my own likeness.

Hmm, I usually keep the original, but when I'm making a new player profile in a game I've already played and I usually use cheats on those profiles to go trough it all again to see if I missed something or can learn something new, then I rename the profile so it wont seem like I cheat with the actual charachter, I know, it's silly xD

It depends what game, and how important the character is. For example I'd name my aeons and pokemon whatever I wanted, but if its a main character, like others have said Link, then no xDD
