Everyone knows that humans aren't perfect. We don't always get along, which is evident in genocide and wars that mankind has witnessed. What I would like to know is what you think it would take for there to be actual harmony in the world. Do you think it's possible for the nations of Earth to come to an accord?

If yes, explain why and how long this could take.

If no, explain why something like peace is inevitably out of reach for us humans.

I don't want to seem like a pessimist, but I'm beginning to think it's impossible. A few years back, before 9-11, I thought that growing older would be good, because by then people would have fixed all of their problems. I know better now. I still have hope for us and see the beauty in life, but I no longer turn a blind eye to what is really going on. Please be open and honest.

I don't think we will ever achieve perfect peace. No matter what treaties we may write, what world issues we solve, there will always be someone out there ready to start crap.

But I don't think its good to get pessimistic about it and give up. We cannot achieve perfection, but if we strive for it, we can achieve excellence.

What it would take would be something to prove irrefutably that we are all human beings. And that would take nothing less than the discovery of life different to our own. Then we would have something to compare ourselves too, and possibly to unite against. A common cause if you will.

The only way the people of earth will ever unite is if there is an enemy outside of earth. Now, I'm not (exclusively) talking about aliens. If we humans populate other worlds, self-sufficient worlds, we may start fighting amongst those worlds, with each of them having their own government. Thus, the earth would be at peace, but the race would not.

Now, if you mean, will the human race ever be at peace, the simple answer is "No". We humans have bred into us, by evolution or design, an implacable drive to better ourselves, usually at the expense of others.

Technically any humans on another world (such as Mars) would be deemed alien. If you want to read more into it (the OP I mean, or anyone for that matter) I would recommend The Mars Trilogy (Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars). In these books the gradual terraforming of Mars is described along with all the social and political fallout this entails. Including the Terran vs Martian conflict that springs up once Mars is sufficiently self-sufficient with both sides verging on war with each other.

no i dont think so, the only way this can happen is if all religon and beliefs
were one in the same, because its why people start things, because people are always ranked of their beauty, rank, or gender or just their own religon or race

Actually, any human, anywhere, unless significant genetic changes are made, is still Homo sapiens sapiens. Now, we might have to make genetic adaptations for other planets (slightly different lungs for slightly different atmospheres, denser bones for high-g worlds, etc), but we would probably still be human, and we would still be at war.

And I've read the Mars trilogy, and it's pretty good, but I was referring to colonizing an extra-solar planet, to a self-sufficient level.

So you're basically saying that we as people have certain traits hardwired into our minds that keep us all disconnected and unable to function as one. I'm beginning to think it's understandable, because we all think differently. I just wish people could all learn to think on a more placid wavelength.

I'm curious to see a reply from someone that thinks something other than an Independance Day (Roland Emmerich) situation would have to occur for us to band together.

I can pretty much say that IF the world were to achive "World peace" there would still be hundreds of people who would create violence or negitivity-where it to be in secret-by Message,by transit or by abuse...there will allways be a few who just will not co-opperate

I don't believe we can have perfect peace, but I can see us getting close to it. I mean look how far we've gotten now. Most countries are in the U.N, trying to make something of the world, then again, not all countries are.

We can take schools as an example, there's always gonna be snot-nosed brats that think they own the place and act like a bad kids, but we can reduce that to a smaller percent if we do something about it.

To make it more specific. When humans from one planet can't breed with humans from another planet, then you have a different species. Although it's more of a subspecies.

But back on topic, as others have said, true peace may be near impossible. You'd have to have everyone agree on everything so no arguments would ever be made. In order to get people to have the same opinions, their individuality would need to be sacrificed. Or if free will is taken away, then people would have no choice but to be good, if there's someone to tell people to "behave". <-<

There is one person who can do that. Chuck norris.

but there is no way for people to achieve world peace unless some catastrophe that could wipe us all out ,that would probably achieve world peace for a few hours then w go into turmoil deciding what to do

i think it's impossible to have "world peace" because we humans are programed to die at one point so that must mean the things we do also die at one point, right? War may end for awhile and long peaceful years may come after it but then someone won't like the way things are ran and start war all over again. unless the government (or media) try to hide the information about the war and create a fake peace for us to live in. i truly believe that is what the world is going to come to soon....

To end conflict would require every human on earth to share universal beliefs, including opinions on government, religion, crime and punishment, etcetc. It is human nature not to get along with everyone you meet, and it is one of the most amazing qualities in humans that we all have different personalities and viewpoints. Attainment of peace would be like 1984. No one could have individual opinions because they might cause trouble. No one could deviate from a standard, no one could be original. If such a thing were somehow to occur then human existence would be peaceful, but it wouldn't be existence at all.
And I feel like a disgusting person saying this but, if war was obsolete and everyone coexisted, the rate of growth of the human population would skyrocket. The planet can't support an infinite number of people. Humans have always fought, and we always die, but the species still manages to continue on and flourish... that's all I could ask for.

If one of 2 things happen:

    1) People learn to love each other as they love themselves (unlikely)
    2) The human race no longer exists.

Don't feel disgusting for seeing overpopulation as a bad thing. No one wants things like starvation or war, but it allows us to survive on a planet that is ill-equipped to handle more people.

The question wasn't whether it's possible to make everyone happy. If everyone were like me it could happen. Honeybuns and swings make me happy. I assumed that peace meant there would be a compromise, which usually leaves most unsatisfied.

there will be world peace when everytime i snap my fingers a hotdog will fall out of the sky(NEVER!!). world peace is a fom of perfection and no one/nothing can achieve perfection in any way, shape, or form so no peace can only be possible from lack of existance. human instinct is simply against peace so yea there is my 2 cents
