is 100% blind, and has made his way upstairs to my bedroom door about 5 times in the past 4 days. He also found his way from my bed, out of my room, down the stairs, into the breakfast nook to his food bowl in the corner. I took my eyes off him for a minute and he was gone, rushed around the house hoping he hadn't fallen and snapped his neck. Find him downstairs snackin', he looks up in my general direction like "'Sup boss?" Not a care in the goddamn world. My cat is better than most of you.
One of my relatives has a little blind dog who does the same things. It makes me wonder if animals adapt to blindness better than humans.
Old enough that we're surprised he's still kickin'. Last time we took him to the vet he was diagnosed with some cancer-like thing, apparently it's common in older cats. Basically his days are numbered, but as long as he can eat and is still doing, we were told to just make him comfortable. Hell, he's barely phased - he just meanders about a bit on his way anywhere. But it hasn't stopped him getting where he wants to go. That and he fuckin' howls in the middle of the night. Awful noise, like a long drawn-out mrohhhh. Gives me a heartache every time. It sounds to me like he's scared and lonely, but Ma's convinced he's just whining for attention. Either way, I try to keep an eye on him when I'm around.
That is absolutely adorable. Glad he's not letting that ruin his life. And I'm sorry about the cancer thing. My cat had the same thing a few years back and he ended up with a tumor in his mouth. When he couldn't eat anymore we just had to let him go. Broke my heart to see the poor guy like that, especially given that he was older than me (I was thirteen).
;~~; aw! I had a kitty with cancer. It's a tough one. Strong little cat you have. Well it seems he has a great family looking after him. =) Happy kitty for sure. Have you tried getting him to sleep next to you at night so he knows you are still there? Being the middle of the night and blind, he could feel a little lost without any sound.
Yeah, Ma's been keeping him in the master bedroom I think. But he's still got a little wanderlust in him, so sometimes he'll try to get out, realize he's behind closed doors, and wake us up with his meowing. And the folks have been on vacation, so last few nights he'd just sleep on his little makeshift bed on the couch. Lord knows if I had him in here I'd probably roll on him, all the fidgeting I do in bed. I dunno, might test run it tonight, see how he takes it.
Replace the word "blind" with "fat" and we have the exact same experience. But anyway, glad to see your cat's badassing his handicap. c:<
