This is something I've been thinking about for a good while and am just now suggesting it to the staff of the forum.

The Debate Section needs work. I'll be honest with you. The ONE sticky'd thread on how to debate hardly gets read and when it does get read the members don't bother to put those suggestion into practice.

So I'm going to suggest that there be moderators for the debate section. In person debates such as the Presidential ones ALWAYS have a neutral(ideally) individual to keep the debate on track and not just a big shouting match. And since the majority of members are all 'lol how do i debate?' this would also TEACH them how to properly debate in real life.

It's nine times out of ten like this:

Person A: My way is right!
Person B: No my way is right and you should see it that way!

    When it should be:

Person A: I believe that this is how it should be for the following reasons.
Person B: I can see where you're coming from but could you see it this way?

I realize not everyone has had the experience like I did in school where we had debated and we learned how to do them properly. I feel if this is done properly then it would be practice for real world application.

I hope this was coherent to you staff and members. I would like to see this as a way to improve a great forum and make something like debating a fun experience...instead of causing me to run to my Advil bottle every time I read posts there. :3

The staff could just give one of the mods the debate and ID sections to especially one mod that's already , that would guide it and teach members how to do it.

If any staff got the qualification I guess. Which I think they do. :3

I think this is a FANTASTIC idea ^^ and it NEEDS to be done! LOL like I said before, some members need hitting with a brick before they learn how to debate/discuss intelligently xP

Hmmm now who posts there a lot that has the experience to mod it? Is intelligent? Let me think,

    Hell yeah it does.

I've seen so many ridiculous posts in that thread, it's not even funny. It's like no one really knows how to debate these days. It's always 'Nuh-uh!!! It's MY WAI!1111' or 'You're wrong becuz I pwn u'.

    *sigh*

I know I'm in the minority when I say this, but I think that any and all opinions should be respected; whether they're presented unintelligently or not. <_>

Not really, it's a debate. Posts should contribute constructively. If they don't they just ruin it -___-.

I agree with this idea although the person would have to be reliable and completely objective.

Well I think this is a pretty good idea. Could use some adjustments, but yeah.

Mish has a point though :/ Some people like their opinions, but just arent sure how to back it up.

Well there is expressing your opinion and there is being a stubborn *** who refuses to even listen to other people, xP I use the evolution vs religion (or something like that) thread xDDDD

A lot of people had their own opinions, but the way some people went about expressing them was so not right 8D

As much as I agree that I'd love to see more 'intelligent' responses at times than slogans, quotes and bashings from some people in the debate section, I would surmise that sometimes we have to accept that some people aren't capable of it or don't want to spend the time to back up their response, or there just isn't anything to back up.

In the end, it is 'their opinions' they voice and we who like to debate and actually discuss why we feel a way and respect others views etc just have to deal with the fact some people are going to do that and ignore them to get to the rational folks that care to know what a 'debate' is instead of just a confrontation where you snap something out from prejudice. I do see the point raised here but at the same time, I am also reluctant to just say someone should remove those comments by people who randomly spam some silly thing in there because it is not respecting their opinions, even if they aren't really 'debating' but more 'proclaiming this is the way' so you can't get anything constructive out of it. Debates are always on hot topics that will always find people who make these statements so we just kind of figure out who's good at it, who wants to learn, who tries to communicate their thoughts even if they aren't used to it...etc..from the people that just want to be stubborn. I'd have to side with Mish that I don't think the idea is such a hot one and if someone is flaming continuously, then we get a mod.

There really should be someone in there anyway, i've seen how it can get out of contol. I would have to say yes to this.

Well, yeah, on that note, I do think there needs to be a moderator of some sort. I just guess that the wording was a bit too harsh for the need for a mod there, as in the function of the mod, but I do think one needs to be there since sometimes things can get out of hand.

I can respect the opinions of others, Repliku. But the meat of the problem that a lot of people in there don't really bother to explain why they have that opinion in the first place. I don't know how many times I've seen 'Oh yeah I agree with so and so.' and then they don't say WHY they agree.

The moderator would be like how Darky and RVR used to be. They'd still post in the threads but they'd step in when a fight broke out or the thread got too spammy. The selected moderators would keep the debate on task...much like in other sections...excluding SZ of course.

I guess my original idea was a little too much of an ideal. Everyone is going to have their beliefs on a topic, that's inevitable. Since a lot of them involve religion and politics, taboo topics for debates since people have such strong feelings on both.

true, but the real problem is that most ppl in there flame or attack your ego instead of supporting themselves with real solid evidence. hence, that's why i never go there, can't have a REAL intelligent discussion

I still stand by my opinion, and Mish's.
Sure, it would be nice with good debates but that would make some members inconfident for sure. Like since they didn't know how to debate some would be afraid to make mistakes.

Anyhow it would be nice if one of the mods just checked in there from time to time.

And I just want to say; the arts & graphics section need this just as much.

I understand and I do agree with that and hope we do get a mod in there like Darky was doing. I would wish that people would actually explain instead of saying "That's how it is and that's my say!" because that isn't a debate at all really. That's just a proclamation. If a mod does go there, which I think one should in the end, perhaps they can help coax more out of the person than just that remark.

As for people saying others would be intimidated and such, then I guess they should not post in the debate section with proclamations. If they actually are worried of their opinions, then they shouldn't be, but when they just exclaim things and run off, it's not a debate. It's a game of tag, hit and run. Perhaps a spot in the rules should also say that if the poster is nervous or such, take their time and no one will flame, even if they disagree, so that people see we're not such a bad bunch.
